In an electrifying SEC tournament showdown, Florida once again fended off a determined Kentucky squad, securing a 71-63 victory and extending their impressive winning streak to 12 games. The Gators now advance to the semifinals, where they'll face off against the winner of Tennessee vs. Vanderbilt.
Xavian Lee was the hero in the final moments, delivering a crucial 3-pointer and a pivotal steal in the last 50 seconds. These plays sealed the deal for Florida, despite a spirited comeback attempt by Kentucky, led by former Gator Denzel Aberdeen.
The Wildcats made it interesting late in the game. Colin Chandler’s three free throws, after being fouled by Boogie Fland, cut Florida's lead to 62-54 with just over three minutes left.
Aberdeen then drew a charge, further closing the gap to 62-56. But Florida’s All-SEC forward, Thomas Haugh, responded with a turnaround jumper, part of his 13-point performance, to steady the ship.
Aberdeen kept the pressure on with a 3-pointer, narrowing the margin to 66-61. However, Lee’s clutch 3-pointer and subsequent steal thwarted Kentucky’s efforts, despite Florida’s struggles from the field in the second half.
The Gators’ shooting woes were evident, hitting only 29.2% after halftime and enduring a lengthy scoring drought. Yet, their defense and rebounding prowess kept Kentucky at bay, limiting them to 35.6% shooting and dominating the boards with a 50-29 advantage.
Alex Condon was a standout for Florida, posting a game-high 22 points and notching his 16th career double-double with 10 rebounds. His early second-half scoring spree helped the Gators maintain control over a Kentucky team playing its third game in as many days.
Florida's defense set the tone from the start, jumping to an 18-8 lead with aggressive play and timely steals, including three from SEC Defensive Player of the Year Rueben Chinleyu. Despite a Kentucky surge fueled by Mouhaned Dioubate’s quick 3-pointers, the Gators’ 13-0 run in the first half, highlighted by Fland’s scoring burst, established a cushion they would not relinquish.
With their sights set on a second consecutive SEC tournament title, Todd Golden’s squad demonstrated resilience and depth, reminiscent of their 2014 success against Kentucky. As they prepare for the semifinals, the Gators are proving to be a formidable force in the tournament.
