Jon Sumrall and the Florida Gators are making waves with their latest coaching staff addition.
Since taking the helm in Gainesville last November, Sumrall has been on a mission to revitalize the Gators. His efforts in the transfer portal have been nothing short of impressive, earning Florida a 12th-place ranking in On3's portal standings. Not one to rest, Sumrall is also making significant strides on the recruiting trail, eyeing top prospects for 2027.
The latest move in Sumrall's strategic overhaul is bringing in Saxon to focus on the Gators' defensive line, working alongside current defensive line coach Gerald Chatman. Saxon arrives with a wealth of experience, having spent eight years at South Carolina State, where he served as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach during his last four years. He also brings experience from a stint with Louisville's coaching staff.
Sumrall steps into a challenging role, taking over a Florida program that struggled to a 4-8 finish last season and has only one winning season in the past five years. It's a stark contrast to the powerhouse days under Urban Meyer, but Sumrall is determined to restore pride to The Swamp.
At 43, Sumrall's track record speaks for itself. His previous head coaching roles at Troy and Tulane resulted in a combined 43-12 record, including leading Tulane to an 11-3 finish and a College Football Playoff berth.
The atmosphere in Gainesville is already shifting, and with Sumrall's vision and leadership, the Gators are poised for a resurgence.
