Florida Gators Soar Into Top 10 Most Popular College Basketball Teams

Florida basketball's ascent under Todd Golden elevates them to a top 10 national spotlight, driven by major victories and impressive viewership numbers.

Florida basketball is riding high under the leadership of head coach Todd Golden. In just four seasons, the Gators have soared, clinching an SEC Tournament and a national title in 2025, followed by an SEC regular season title in 2026. This impressive run has catapulted Florida into the national spotlight.

A recent Nielsen survey highlights Florida's rise, ranking them as the 10th most popular college basketball program in the nation. This ranking is a blend of viewership and social media engagement from November 2025 to March 2026, showcasing the Gators' growing fanbase and media presence.

Florida shares the Top 10 spotlight with fellow SEC powerhouses Kentucky and Arkansas, while Duke sits at the top of the list. The survey took into account social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram, along with a broad range of TV networks, including ESPN, CBS, and ABC.

The Gators' ascent began back in 1994 with Lon Kruger's leadership, reaching their first Final Four. The momentum continued under Hall of Fame coach Billy Donovan, who guided the team to four Final Fours and two national championships between 1996 and 2015.

Golden has reignited that legacy, with Florida frequently featured on major networks such as TNT, FS1, and ABC. Their Valentine's Day clash with Kentucky on ABC attracted 1.8 million viewers, marking the highest viewership for a game on the network since the 2008-09 season. The rematch at Rupp Arena on ESPN drew even more attention with 1.89 million viewers.

Now, Florida is set to defend its national title as the No. 1 seed in the South Region. They'll face off at Benchmark International Arena in Tampa on March 20, awaiting the winner of the First Four matchup between Lehigh and Prairie View A&M. The Gators are ready to continue their thrilling journey, and fans across the nation are eagerly watching.
