Before the Florida Gators tip off their NCAA Tournament run as the No. 1 seed in the South Region, senior center Micah Handlogten has shared some candid thoughts. The Gators are set to face No. 16 Prairie View A&M, but it’s clear they’re still processing their recent wake-up call.
The Gators were on a roll, dominating their opponents with a 12-game winning streak and an average victory margin of 20.5 points. But then came the SEC Tournament clash with Vanderbilt, where they were handed a surprising 91-74 loss. It was a stark reminder that nothing is guaranteed, even for reigning NCAA champions.
Handlogten sees the silver lining in that defeat. “It was definitely humbling,” he admitted.
“None of those games were really close, but then we went out and just got punched. It brings you down to earth really quickly.
That’s why … to be honest, maybe we needed it.”
His perspective is a testament to the competitive nature of March Madness. No game is a given, and the Gators know it. Just look at how top seed Duke had to battle past Siena, or how Michigan struggled to shake off Howard before pulling away.
Florida is heavily favored to handle Prairie View A&M, and it’s hard to find anyone outside of Prairie View A&M’s loyal fans who would argue otherwise. But the road ahead is fraught with challenges, including a potential Sweet 16 rematch with Vanderbilt.
Handlogten, who has been a key contributor off the bench with 4.1 points and 5.9 rebounds per game, is ready for whatever comes next. His shooting accuracy of 63.8 percent underscores his efficiency and importance to the team’s depth.
The Gators are gearing up, and if they do meet the Commodores again, you can bet they’ll be ready. Handlogten’s words echo a team that’s learned its lesson and is poised to make another deep run.
