Florida football is gearing up for a dynamic 2026 season, with a keen focus on ramping up production from its outside linebackers. Under the fresh leadership of head coach Jon Sumrall and defensive coordinator Brad White, the Gators are adopting a 3-4 defensive scheme, spotlighting the edge rush "jack" position. This role is set to be a cornerstone of their defensive strategy, with plenty of opportunities to pressure the quarterback.
Bam Hardmon, the outside linebackers coach, emphasized the need for dominance on the edge. "We have to be sound and explosive," Hardmon stated, highlighting the importance of making a significant impact in both pass rushing and containment.
Hardmon, who shone as a linebacker for Florida from 1998-2002, has returned to his alma mater with a proven track record from Tulane and Troy. His leadership saw Tulane amass 69 sacks over two seasons, and he’s optimistic about replicating that success with the Gators.
"We've got talent returning and some high-upside newcomers," Hardmon noted. "Spring will be our chance to put it all together, setting the stage for a productive fall."

Spotlight on Jayden Woods
Standing at 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds, Jayden Woods is coming off an impressive freshman year, earning All-SEC honors with 28 tackles, 3.5 sacks, an interception, and a fumble recovery. The coaching staff, including Sumrall, made a concerted effort to retain Woods, traveling to Shawnee, Kansas, to ensure his commitment. His dedication in the weight room this offseason has been remarkable, setting him up for continued success.
"He’s doing all the right things in the offseason," Hardmon praised. "His work ethic and preparation are setting him up for a successful fall."
Kofi Asare’s Return
Kofi Asare, at 6-foot-5 and 251 pounds, is back after a solid 2025 season with 19 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a sack. His experience will be invaluable to the Gators' defensive efforts.
Fresh Talent: KJ Ford
KJ Ford, a promising four-star recruit from Duncanville, Texas, is already turning heads. At 6-foot-4 and 245 pounds, Ford has shown maturity and a strong work ethic in preseason training. "I’m excited to see him execute at a fast pace this spring," Hardmon said, anticipating Ford's impact.
As the Gators prepare for the upcoming season, the blend of experienced returners and promising newcomers in the outside linebacker corps is creating a buzz. With Hardmon's strategic guidance, Florida's defense is poised to make waves in 2026.
