Gators Dominate Prairie View A&M, Set Sights on Iowa
In a display of sheer dominance, the Florida Gators showed why they're defending champions, dismantling Prairie View A&M with a staggering 114-55 victory at the Benchmark International Arena. The 59-point margin stands as the second largest in NCAA Tournament history, a testament to the Gators' powerhouse status.
Florida's center, Rueben Chinyelu, was a force to be reckoned with, notching a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds in just 20 minutes. His relentless play set the tone early, as the Gators advanced to face No. 9 Iowa in the second round.
"Rueben is just phenomenal," praised Gators coach Todd Golden. "His improvement and work ethic are unmatched. Once we started getting stops, he was dominant on the boards and sparked our transition game."
Despite entering as 35.5-point underdogs, Prairie View A&M showed early resilience. Cory Wells kept them competitive, hitting two early threes to tie the game at 15-15. But Florida responded with an 18-0 run, showcasing their offensive prowess with highlight-reel plays, including Alex Condon's emphatic dunks.
By halftime, the Gators had surged to a 39-point lead. Guard Boogie Fland, who added 16 points, emphasized the team's return to form. "We had to get back to who we are," he stated.
Looking ahead, the Gators will need to contend with Iowa's standout guard Bennett Stirtz, who averages 20 points and 4.5 assists. Iowa, fresh off a win over Clemson, boasts a balanced attack with Stirtz, Alvaro Folgueiras, and Kael Combs all hitting double figures.
Iowa's coach, Ben McCollum, acknowledged the challenge ahead without Clemson's Carter Welling, who was sidelined with an ACL injury. "It's unfortunate about their big guy," McCollum said. "But Iowa's size and balanced scoring will be a test."
The upcoming clash promises to be a battle of tempo and strategy. "They play really good basketball," Golden noted about Iowa. "It’s going to be a big challenge for us."
As Florida gears up for Sunday’s showdown, fans can expect a thrilling contest between two well-prepared teams.
