Florida Gators head coach Todd Golden is making a strong case for his team's prowess as Selection Sunday approaches. Despite a tough 91-74 loss to the Vanderbilt Commodores in the SEC Tournament, which dashed their hopes for a conference title and a potential No. 1 seed, Golden remains confident in his team's overall performance.
The Gators had been on a remarkable 12-game winning streak before their setback against Vanderbilt, with impressive victories over powerhouses like Kentucky, Alabama, and Arkansas. Golden emphasized this streak, stating, "We haven't lost in 54 days or something leading up to this game, playing some of the best basketball in America.
I do believe we've done enough to be the fourth 1-seed. But we'll find out tomorrow night."
As the defending national champions, Florida's recent form has turned heads, and ESPN's Joe Lunardi agrees with Golden's assessment. Lunardi believes that despite the loss, Florida's achievements in a stronger league position them well for a top seed, especially after UConn's defeat to St. John's in the Big East Tournament championship.
"Florida was the outright champion of a far stronger league. UConn finished second in a far weaker league," Lunardi noted.
"I fully expect that Florida is going to be the No. 1 seed in the South [Sunday] night. The committee, for all the slings and arrows they take, are very good at not overreacting to a single result."
As the anticipation builds, all eyes will be on the selection committee's decision to see if Golden's confidence in his squad is rewarded with a coveted top seed in the NCAA Tournament.
