Florida’s injury-hit receiver room could open the door a little wider for Justin Williams, and Jon Sumrall sounds ready to keep handing the true freshman chances.
Williams, a local product from Buchholz High in Gainesville, has been one of the few first-year players to carve out any real role for Florida during the 2026 season. In the Gators’ 27-8 loss to Georgia in Atlanta, he caught two passes for nine yards, and another longer grab came off the board because of a holding penalty.
At 5-foot-11 and 199 pounds, Williams may be in line for more work as Florida tries to piece together its offense. Sophomore Vernell Brown III is still week-to-week with a knee injury, while Bailey Stockton and Eric Singleton Jr. are both playing through injuries and not at full strength.
“You're going to see more on offense and more on special teams,” Sumrall said of Williams. “He looks like he's got some juice.
We got him the ball on the perimeter. He practiced today, looked really good.”
Through eight games, Williams has four catches for 30 yards. He also had a rough moment earlier in the year when he muffed a punt against Campbell in Week 2, but he could still be part of the punt return mix if Brown and Stockton remain sidelined.
Florida offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner also pointed to Williams’ progress.
“Justin showed some flashes that were really excited about his future,” Faulkner said. “He’s got to continue to get better every day. And I think he is he’s earned the right to play a little bit.”
Sumrall said Williams isn’t the only young player pushing his way toward the varsity group. He also mentioned receiver Marquez Daniel, defensive back Dylan Purter, JUCO transfer defensive back Elijah Owens and offensive lineman Desmond Green as players moving up from the scout team and starting to make themselves noticed in practice.
“I don't know how much they're going to change our ‘26 team, but there's some guys that I see their trajectory for how they're going to help us in the future,” Sumrall said. “You can tell they've been really hard at work in the weight room, on scout team, and we're finding them some reps with the varsity bunch in practice because they're showing signs of life.”
Florida is 5-3 overall and 3-3 in the SEC and returns home to face Oklahoma on Saturday, November 7 at The Swamp. Kickoff is set for 7:45 p.m. on SEC Network.

Florida Faces A Tricky Oklahoma QB Situation After Major Shakeup
Oklahomas offense is heading into the Florida game with a new voice in the booth after the Sooners fired offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle following a disappointing Week 9 showing. Head coach Brent Venables has moved quickly to steady things by naming Jason Witten as the interim offensive playcaller, a notable shakeup with the Gators now preparing for a team that is trying to regroup on the fly.
Even with the change on the sideline, Venables plans to stick with senior John Mateer as the starting quarterback against Florida. Mateer has had an inconsistent season, but he came out of the South Carolina game with a solid performance, which gives Oklahoma at least one familiar piece as it tries to sort out the rest of its offense before facing the Gators. Florida Suddenly Faces A Bigger Problem Than Just Losing To Georgia
The loss to Georgia did more than dent Floridas playoff path. It left Jon Sumrall looking for signs that his team can absorb a gut punch and keep moving, because the next stretch will tell him plenty about where this group really stands. Sumrall said the Gators have to own the defeat and turn quickly toward the games still in front of them if they want to keep a nine-win season within reach.
That task is made tougher by what comes next, with Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State still on the schedule. Florida no longer has the luxury of dwelling on what happened in Jacksonville, and the bigger question now is whether the Gators can respond with the kind of emotional toughness that keeps a season from slipping away. Florida Reopens Its QB Battle At The Worst Possible Time
Florida has turned its quarterback situation back into a week-to-week storyline, listing Aaron Philo and Tramell Jones Jr. as co-starters ahead of its Week 10 matchup with Oklahoma. After a recent loss, head coach Jon Sumrall has reopened the competition and is keeping the door open on the position, with both quarterbacks taking part in Mondays practice as the staff works through the decision.
Sumrall said a final call will come closer to game day, which leaves the Gators trying to regain some stability at the most important spot on the field while preparing for a tough conference test. For a team looking to bounce back, the timing is far from ideal, but it also underscores how much the staff wants to see before settling on who will lead the offense on Saturday. [Read more 🡒]
