Florida football is making a key addition to its coaching staff, zeroing in on Marcus Davis as its next wide receivers coach. The move brings a familiar face back to the Sunshine State and adds a rising name in the coaching ranks to Jon Sumrall’s new-look Gators staff.
Davis, a Boynton Beach native, has deep SEC roots. He played four seasons at Auburn from 2013 to 2016, where he was part of a Tigers team that won an SEC title and reached the BCS National Championship Game.
He capped off his college career as a senior captain - a leadership role that’s followed him into coaching. Davis earned both his undergraduate and master’s degrees at Auburn, setting the tone early for a future in player development and mentorship.
After his playing days, Davis stayed on at Auburn in a support role, working as an offensive analyst during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. He focused on running backs and kick returners, and later shifted into player personnel and development - a behind-the-scenes role that gave him a broader view of building a program from the inside out.
In 2020, Davis made the move to Florida State as an offensive graduate assistant. There, he worked directly with the wide receivers and contributed on the recruiting trail. That season helped sharpen his coaching chops and laid the groundwork for his next step - a full-time position coach role.
That opportunity came in 2021 with Hawaii, where Davis took over as wide receivers coach. He held that position through the 2022 season, including a standout year when he helped guide Georgia Southern to one of the most prolific passing attacks in the country.
The Eagles finished fourth nationally in passing yards per game (329.2) and tied for 20th in passing touchdowns (28). It was a clear sign that Davis could not only coach up talent, but also help scheme an explosive aerial attack.
His success didn’t go unnoticed. On December 29, 2022, Davis returned to Auburn - this time as a full-time assistant.
Over the past two seasons, he’s been one of the Tigers’ most effective recruiters, particularly at wide receiver. He played a major role in landing key commitments from blue-chip prospects like Cam Coleman, Perry Thompson, and Malcolm Simmons in the 2024 recruiting class.
While Auburn’s passing game had its struggles, the receiver room consistently flashed talent - a testament to Davis’ eye for skill and his development work.
Now, Davis joins a Florida program in transition. He’s part of a revamped coaching staff led by new head coach Jon Sumrall, who’s putting together a group that blends SEC experience with fresh energy. Alongside Davis are defensive coordinator Brad White, offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, offensive line coach Phil Trautwein, defensive backs coach Brandon Harris, and safeties coach Chris Collins.
For Florida, bringing in Marcus Davis is more than just filling a position - it’s a strategic hire aimed at improving recruiting, player development, and offensive production. With his Florida roots, SEC pedigree, and proven ability to connect with young talent, Davis could be a pivotal piece in the Gators’ efforts to reestablish themselves as a force in the conference.
