Florida’s Jon Sumrall has already been handed a little extra fuel before coaching a single snap in Gainesville.
CBS Sports’ John Toppmeyer slotted the new Gators coach in the middle of the SEC pack and tagged him with a blunt “consolation prize” label after Florida missed on Lane Kiffin. For a program that got pulled into the chaos of Kiffin’s decision to leave Ole Miss during a College Football Playoff run, the ranking and the wording land like bulletin-board material.
The coaching carousel also sent ripples beyond Florida. LSU jumped into the Kiffin chase after firing Brian Kelly and taking on a $50 million-plus buyout, while Alex Golesh left USF for Auburn. Once Kiffin was no longer in play for the Gators, Florida turned to Sumrall.
It’s still far too early to judge what Sumrall will do at Florida before the team plays this fall. Billy Napier found success at the Group of 6 level before struggling with the Gators, and Sumrall arrives with his own résumé from outside the SEC spotlight.
Toppmeyer pointed to that background as reason for optimism, writing, “This might be the last chance to buy low on Sumrall stock,” Toppmeyer wrote. “He won more than 78% of his games in four seasons as a Group of Six coach.
He took Tulane to the CFP. Sure, he must still prove himself in the SEC, but there’s no reason to think he can’t reinvigorate Florida.
“He played in this conference. He’s worked in it, too, as an assistant.
Sumrall became a hot commodity on the coaching carousel. He’s a good consolation prize for Florida after it missed on Kiffin.”

Billy Napier And DJ Lagway Finally Address What Went Wrong At Florida
Billy Napier is no longer on the sideline in Gainesville, but his reflections on what went wrong there still land with some weight. In an On3 interview, the former Florida coach said he was stubborn about not hiring an offensive coordinator and admitted that he and his staff were stretched thin trying to handle the roster-building demands of the NIL and portal era, a reminder of how quickly the job changed while the Gators were trying to keep up.
DJ Lagway, meanwhile, offered his own explanation for a difficult 2024 season while speaking at Big 12 Media Days after transferring to Baylor last December. The former Florida quarterback pointed to health problems and the mental side of playing through limited reps, adding another layer to a year that never really settled for him or for the program he left behind. Florida Has Two Chances To Prove This Rebuild Is Real
Jon Sumrall arrives in Gainesville with the kind of rsum that gives Florida reason to believe this rebuild can move faster than expected. The Gators still have questions to answer at key positions, but the nine-game SEC schedule also gives them chances to show they are more than a team in transition. For a program trying to reestablish itself, the real test is not just improving week to week, but proving it can make life difficult for teams with playoff ambitions.
That is where the late-season stretch becomes so interesting. Analysts are already circling Florida as a potential trap game for Oklahoma and Ole Miss, the kind of opponent that can turn a contenders path into a mess if the Gators are ready for the moment. If Florida can turn one of those opportunities into a statement win, it would say plenty about how real this rebuild might be under Sumrall. [Read more 🡒]
Florida Urged To Stop Wasting Its Best Offensive Weapon
Floridas offense is still sorting out its quarterback situation, and that uncertainty has pushed even more attention toward the one area that already looks ready-made for the fall. Jadan Baugh is coming off a season in which he averaged 5.3 yards per carry, and the Gators have the kind of backfield depth that can let them lean on the ground game while the passing picture settles in.
For a team trying to position itself for a postseason bowl run, the temptation is obvious: stop treating the run game like a support piece and start making it the centerpiece. Baugh has already built the profile of a player with real NFL upside, and if Florida is serious about maximizing its best offensive weapon, the coming weeks should tell us whether the staff is willing to build around him or keep waiting for the rest of the offense to catch up.
