Florida’s quarterback battle may be coming into focus, and Jon Sumrall’s next public comments could be the clearest clue yet.
The Gators held their second scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday night, and this one wasn’t nearly as sealed off as the first. Bits and pieces started leaking onto social media, with the biggest note being that Tramell Jones got work with the first team. He reportedly turned that into a touchdown and an interception.
That matters because the race between Jones and Aaron Philo is supposed to determine who opens the 2026 season as Florida’s QB1, and Sumrall has only about a week left before he has to make that call. His press conference this week should say plenty about where things stand, especially whether Jones did enough in the scrimmage to keep this competition alive or whether Saturday was mostly a checkpoint on the way to a decision.
The way Sumrall handles Jones this week will be worth watching closely. It already felt like he had been evaluating the two quarterbacks on different levels, with Philo seeming to get a little more room for mistakes. Sumrall’s comments have also suggested that one reason Philo has stayed in front is his command of Florida’s offense.
That makes the tone around Jones especially important now. Last week, Sumrall made a point of praising Philo for bouncing back with a touchdown drive after an interception. The obvious question is whether Jones gets that same kind of public support after his scrimmage performance.
If Sumrall comes out with stronger praise for Jones while sounding less upbeat about Philo, that would tell you plenty. If he sticks to the same pattern he’s followed all camp, that says something too.
For now, nobody outside the program truly knows which quarterback is the better answer. Most Gator fans just want the one who gives Florida the best chance to win games. Based on the limited glimpses that have surfaced, Jones would be the pick here, though there’s clearly a lot happening behind closed doors.
And that’s the key difference from something like NFL preseason. In college camp, the full picture stays hidden.
There’s no All-22 for every rep, no preseason games to sort it all out in public. So the story Florida chooses to tell matters.
Right now, the only narrative fans have is the one Sumrall puts out there. If that story starts leaning clearly toward one quarterback, that’s where the questions begin.
