When Aaron Philo took over as Florida’s quarterback, Jon Richt and Greg Vandagriff saw a familiar player stepping into a familiar role.
Ten months after Philo entered the transfer portal, Richt said Florida was getting exactly what he expected: a steady hand at quarterback. Once he arrived in Gainesville, Philo won the QB1 job right away.
For him, leading an offense was nothing new. He had already spent two seasons backing up Haynes King at Georgia Tech, and before that he spent three years as the starter at Prince Avenue Christian after Brock Vandagriff moved on.
“I think he's done a really good job, especially being a first-year starter in the toughest conference in America,” former Prince Avenue Christian coach Greg Vandagriff said. “A lot of guys can't do that and I think he's doing really well, to be honest.”
Richt said the challenge of being a backup can actually be tougher in some ways than being the starter.
“And it's kind of the same job,” Richt said about being a starter versus a backup quarterback. “It's harder to do it as a number two guy, because you have to prepare the same way, because you don't know when that guy that's ahead of you goes down, or something's going to happen and then your number gets called.”
Philo’s track record in high school was as loud as it gets. As a sophomore, he completed 297 of 408 passes for 4,540 yards, 47 touchdowns and 14 interceptions, while also adding 184 rushing yards and 9 scores on 70 touches.
His junior year brought 274 completions on 397 attempts for 4,598 yards, 54 touchdowns and 8 interceptions, plus 361 yards and 8 touchdowns on the ground. As a senior, he went 328 for 469 for 4,596 yards, 56 touchdowns and 9 interceptions, and added 610 rushing yards and 15 more scores.
In the 2023 state title game against Swainsboro, Philo cemented himself as Georgia’s all-time leading passer, finishing with 13,922 career yards and passing Trevor Lawrence, Gunner Stockton and Deshaun Watson. He did it after three straight seasons as a starter with more than 4,500 passing yards each year.
He also sits third and fourth all-time in the state for passing yards in a season based on his junior and senior numbers, and he ranks fifth all-time in passing yards per game thanks to a 557-yard outing against Christian Academy of Knoxville in August 2021. His 159 career passing touchdowns rank third all-time, behind Stockton and Lawrence, and he shares the state record for passing touchdowns in a season with K'Hari Lane of Macon County at 56. He has thrown as many as six touchdowns in a single game.
Now, Florida is waiting on his health. Philo is dealing with a shoulder injury, according to Gainesville Sun beat writers Kevin Brockway and Andrew Abadie. Richt said he had dealt with the same injury as a junior in high school, though not as seriously, and was able to finish that game and the rest of the season.
The injury happened in the fourth quarter of Florida’s 38-19 loss to South Carolina on Oct. 10.
He took a hit on an 8-yard scramble with 11 minutes left, left the field for one snap, then returned for the next play before spending the rest of the game on the sideline. A week later, after being listed as a game-time decision, he did not play in Florida’s 27-24 win over Texas.
Florida coach Jon Sumrall said Philo went through warmups and was available in an “emergency capacity” that day, per Abadie.
Vandagriff said the message to Philo would be simple: “Come back ... when your body is ready, not when you think you're ready,” Vandagriff said is the advice he'd give Philo. “Don't risk your future for something today.”
Even with the injury, Philo’s production has shown the same dual-threat profile he carried through high school and college. He has completed 105 of 149 passes for 1,341 yards, 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions this season, and he has added 104 rushing yards and 3 more scores on 44 carries.
“As the leader of (Florida's) offense, he's done a good job,” Richt said. “In terms of his leadership qualities, he's always had that.
That cool, quiet demeanor that basically creates confidence with everybody else around you. One thing he's always been really good at is making everybody else around him better.”
“He's not a super emotional kid, meaning like he's never going to be up, never going to be down,” Vandagriff said. “You want a kid that can operate and be calm in the middle of chaos and he does that. ... He can make all the throws and then he's also a willing runner, and what that means is he wants to distribute the ball to the playmakers and then when necessary, he'll run as well.”

Florida Could Make Georgia Sweat In Rivalry Game For One Reason
Floridas spot on the Georgia scouting report got a little more interesting in Week 9, and not just because the rivalry always brings its own edge. With several ranked teams facing potential trouble and the first College Football Playoff rankings approaching, the Gators are part of a bigger Saturday picture that could reshape the standings if the favorites stumble.
The uncertainty around Floridas quarterback situation is the wrinkle worth watching against Georgia, especially in a game where a backup can sometimes change the tone faster than anyone expects. Georgia still has the better resume and the deeper roster, but this is the kind of rivalry setting where a little doubt at the most important position can make a heavy favorite sweat longer than planned. Floridas Best Shot Vs Georgia Starts With One Pressure Point
Floridas path into Saturdays showdown with No. 3 Georgia starts where the Gators have built their most reliable edge: on the ground. Jadan Baugh has become the centerpiece of an offense that needs balance, and against a Georgia defense that is usually at its best against the run, Florida will be trying to turn early-down success into a cleaner, more manageable game. The matchup matters because the Gators have not always been able to create that kind of control, but this one offers a clearer opening than most.
Georgia, for its part, still brings the kind of defensive front that can squeeze out mistakes and force an offense to earn every yard. But the Bulldogs have shown some recent vulnerability against the run, which gives Florida a real pressure point to test before the game becomes a track meet or a third-down grind. If the Gators can make Baugh and the rushing attack matter, it changes the shape of the afternoon. If not, Georgias strengths have a way of taking over quickly. [Read more 🡒]
Florida Faces A Georgia Reality Fans Are Tired Of Living
Myles Graham knows exactly what waits for Florida when it steps into Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday. The Gators linebacker spent part of this week talking about the No. 3 Georgia Bulldogs, and the conversation quickly turned to Gunner Stockton and the challenge he brings to a matchup that carries real weight for both teams College Football Playoff hopes.
For Florida, though, the bigger issue is familiar and frustrating. Georgia has controlled this rivalry for years, and Graham didnt shy away from acknowledging the run the Bulldogs have put together against the Gators. He also made clear he is eager to help change that feeling, which is the part Florida fans have been waiting to hear before another trip into a game that has too often ended the same way.
