Florida’s offense has given the Gators enough juice to stay in the conversation, but Saturday against Ole Miss is where the real test begins.

4 Ole Miss in Gainesville, and the matchup is shaping up as a straight-up proof session for a team trying to show it belongs with the SEC’s best. The Rebels arrive fresh off one of the season’s biggest wins, knocking off then-No.
7 LSU on Saturday night. Florida, meanwhile, has had a mixed start: the first two games against FAU and Campbell were so one-sided they hardly told us anything, and then the Gators went on the road and beat Auburn in Week 3 despite piling up 16 penalties.
That’s why the line has people talking. Florida head coach Jon Sumrall wasn’t interested in just accepting the fact that oddsmakers made the Gators favorites over Ole Miss. He wanted to know what went into that decision.
Jordan Mendoza of USA Today thinks Florida should already be off any fraud watch, pointing to an offense that is starting to look dangerous. “He may not be your ordinary coach, but believe in what Sumrall has going,” Mendoza wrote. “Florida’s offense is dangerous, starting with Jaden Baugh who is second in the country in rushing (458).
“A strong run game compliments a growing Aaron Philo, and you have a team that can easily play spoiler to some SEC heavyweights. The Swamp home field advantage is going to be even greater with these vibes.”
The run game has been the headline, and Baugh’s production has helped fuel that. But the next question is whether Florida can hold up when the other side has the ball. That’s where Ole Miss and Trinidad Chambliss come in.
Florida’s defense has not been nearly as convincing as its offense, and Auburn exposed some of those cracks. Byrum Brown threw for 271 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception against the Gators, while adding 65 yards and another score on the ground. Chambliss, who might be the best quarterback in the country right now, could do even more damage if Florida doesn’t clean things up fast.
So the fraud conversation isn’t settled yet. Saturday should tell us a lot more.
