Florida Faces A Tough SEC Fight For Elite 2028 RB

Can Florida edge out strong competition to secure a top talent and bolster their recruiting class?

Florida’s 2028 recruiting board may be missing a running back right now, but that could change fast if Dalen Powell ends up in orange and blue.

The Gators are a finalist for the four-star back from Ruston, La., a prospect rated as the No. 5 running back in the 2028 class and the No. 1 player in Louisiana. Powell has trimmed his list to 10 schools, and Florida is in the mix with a group packed with heavy hitters.

His final schools include LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas, Miami, Florida State and Kansas State, along with Florida and two others from the top-10 group. The battle is shaping up to be a familiar one for a Louisiana standout, with LSU among the biggest threats.

Powell, who plays at Ruston High School, sits roughly 60 miles east of Shreveport. Florida offered him in Jan. 2026, and his only camp visit so far came at Florida State in June. That limited exposure makes sense for a 2028 recruit, but his profile is already loud.

The numbers back it up. Per his 247Sports bio, Powell missed last year’s playoffs as a sophomore after a leg injury, but during the regular season he piled up 1,156 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 7.23 yards per carry.

He also added 18 catches for 239 yards and three scores, giving Ruston another weapon in the passing game. And on kickoff returns, he’s shown he can flip field position in a hurry.

One clip from last season captured that explosiveness: “DALEN. MIDDLE-NAME.

POWELL. 😮‍💨

The 2028 Ruston running back is putting on an absolute show.

Add the 89-yard kickoff return to his three rushing touchdowns in the first half.

For now, Rivals lists Ole Miss as the early favorite with a 33.4% chance to land him. LSU is expected to be the other major contender, with Lane Kiffin pushing to keep Louisiana talent close to home.

Powell has not set a commitment date yet. If Florida can pull him in, he would join Sumrall’s No. 6 overall class nationally, a group that already includes four-star offensive tackle Samuel Bailey and three-star safety Clayton Smith and receiver Armani Strong.

Urban Meyers Place In History Sets A Tough Florida Standard

Urban Meyers name still hangs over Florida football for a reason. Across four college programs, he piled up a 187-32 record and built a rsum that keeps him in the national conversation, even years after leaving Gainesville. Sports Illustrated recently placed him No. 10 on its all-time list of college football head coaches, a reminder of just how high the bar was set during his run with the Gators.

For Jon Sumrall, the challenge is obvious. He has opened his Florida tenure with some encouraging wins, but the standard at Florida is not simply being competitive, it is matching the level that turned the program into a national power. In the SEC, where the margin for error is thin and the expectations never ease up, that kind of legacy is less a comfort than a measuring stick. [Read more 🡒]

Floridas Frontcourt Just Sent An Early Message Before Florida State

Floridas frontcourt wasted little time setting the tone in an 88-57 win over Jacksonville, and the early-season glimpse was hard to miss. Rueben Chinyelu, Alex Condon and Thomas Haugh combined for 47 points, giving Todd Golden exactly the kind of interior production that can travel well once the schedule tightens up.

Chinyelu led the way with a career-high 21 points and eight rebounds, while Condon added a double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The result also gave Golden his 105th win at Florida, moving him into fifth place on the programs all-time list, and it arrives with Florida State next on the slate. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Offense Suddenly Has A Freshman Fans Need To Watch

Floridas offense has been searching for answers since the knee injury to leading receiver Vernell Brown III, a setback that has shown up in the Gators production and in the way the passing game has lost some of its easy yards after the catch. In the middle of that adjustment, freshman wideout Justin Williams finally got his first career snaps against Georgia, a small step that could matter more as the season moves along.

Williams is now in line for a bigger look as Florida sorts out its receiver rotation and tries to keep the offense from stalling out. Coaches Jon Sumrall and Faulkner have both sounded encouraged by what they have seen from the freshman, and the next stretch will tell whether that confidence turns into a real role on the field.
