Florida Faces A Brutal Test In Its Chance To Shock Texas Again

Can the Gators overcome their offensive woes and defensive challenges to pull off another upset against the Longhorns?

Florida’s trip to Texas comes with a familiar feeling: the Gators are trying to turn a season’s script around before it hardens into something uglier. A few weeks ago, Florida looked like it might be cruising toward the kind of start that changes expectations. Now it’s staring at a three-game skid, and the Longhorns are back in the story again.

That’s the part that makes this matchup feel so strange. Florida’s preseason forecast included a three-game losing streak, and the idea was that Texas would be part of that stretch. Instead, the Gators are dealing with Missouri, South Carolina and now Texas looming in a very different order than anyone expected.

The quarterback situation adds another layer. As of this writing, Tramell Jones appears likely to get the start, though Aaron Philo remains in the picture.

The easy assumption is that Jones gives Florida no chance. The counterargument here is simple: Jones is the quarterback the Gators would have wanted from the start.

Even so, the real headache for Florida isn’t just under center. It’s what Texas brings off the edge.

Colin Simmons has already piled up 9.5 sacks this season, and Florida’s right side is going to be under siege if it can’t protect Emeka Ugorji. If the Gators don’t have a plan for Simmons, this could turn into one of those games where he walks away with three or more sacks and never really stops influencing the afternoon.

That pass-rush problem has fed into Florida’s bigger offensive collapse. The line has been getting overwhelmed, and Jadan Baugh has had nowhere to go.

That’s why the QB decision matters here in the first place. Before the season, the thinking was that Jones might be the better pure quarterback, but Philo could make sense if the line couldn’t hold up long enough to let Jones’ arm strength matter.

So the equation today is pretty clear: can Florida survive long enough up front for Jones to push the ball downfield, force Texas to loosen up, and create even a little room for Baugh? That’s the gamble.

There’s also reason for Florida to believe it can slow Texas on the other side. The Gators shut down the Longhorns last year, and Brad White did the same while at Kentucky. Since Arch Manning became the starting quarterback, Texas has gone over 30 points only four times in 13 games against Power Four opponents.

If Florida fans were handed a final score of Texas 28, a lot of them would take it without much hesitation. And if this had been the first month of the season, plenty would have looked at that kind of number and expected a 41-28 Florida win.

Floridas Passing Game Just Took Another Scary Hit

Floridas passing game took another blow in Austin when senior wide receiver Bailey Stockton went down with a non-contact ankle injury against No. 7 Texas. He had already been a game-time decision before the kickoff, but still suited up and gave the Gators a useful early stretch, finishing with four catches for 31 yards before he had to leave the game.

Stockton had been grinding through injuries for much of the season, which made his presence on the field all the more important for Floridas offense. Losing a veteran target like that in a game of this size only adds to the pressure on the Gators passing attack, and it leaves another question hanging over a group that has already had to adjust on the fly. Floridas Texas Game Suddenly Rests On One Huge QB Decision

Aaron Philos shoulder issue has turned Floridas trip to Texas into more than just another late-season road test. The Gators are waiting until game time to see whether their quarterback is available, and that uncertainty ripples through the offense because if Philo cant go, Tramell Jones is in line for the first start of his career.

The rest of the injury picture is just as unsettled, with Vernell Brown III and Bailey Stockton also listed as game-time decisions. Florida already knows it will be without backup running back Duke Clark, which only adds to the list of moving parts the staff has to sort out before kickoff. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Just Proved It Can Still Take Down SEC Heavyweights

Floridas win over Texas did more than just hand the Longhorns a bruising home loss. It also showed that the Gators can still rise to the moment against elite opposition, with backup quarterback Tramell Jones delivering two touchdown passes in the upset and helping Florida claim a 27-24 road win over the top-ranked team.

Arch Manning finished 14 of 20 for 173 yards and a touchdown, but Texas still stumbled to a second straight defeat after entering the slide at No. 1. For Florida, the victory carried extra weight because it marked the programs first season since 2012 in which it has beaten two top-10 teams, a reminder that the Gators can still land a punch when the stakes climb.
