Florida heads to Austin on Saturday with more than just a road test in front of it. The Gators are trying to stop a two-game skid, and standing in the way is a Texas team that just took its first loss of the season and will be looking to steady itself at home.
Florida enters at 4-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC after a 38-19 loss to South Carolina on homecoming. Texas is 4-1 and 1-1 in league play after falling 27-24 to Oklahoma in its most recent outing. The matchup kicks off Saturday, Oct. 17 at noon on ABC from Darrel K Royal, Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, where the Longhorns will try to answer after that rivalry defeat.
The betting line reflects the challenge ahead for Florida. Texas is listed as a 10.5-point favorite, with the over/under set at 52.5.
Florida also comes in hoping to get Jadan Baugh rolling again. The running back burst out of the gate with four straight 100-yard games to open the 2026 season and carried Heisman buzz early, but he has been held under 100 yards in each of his last two games. Even so, Baugh still sits third in the SEC with 672 rushing yards and leads the conference with 12 rushing touchdowns.
There is at least a small injury note to watch for on the Florida side. Coach Jon Sumrall said Vernell Brown III practiced more on Monday than he did last Friday, but Brown is still expected to be listed as questionable. He has missed the last two games because of a knee strain.
Texas has handled Florida more often than not in the all-time series, owning a 3-1-1 edge. But the Gators won the most recent meeting, knocking off the Longhorns 29-21 at The Swamp on Oct. 4, 2025.
Florida’s full schedule now turns to one of the biggest stages on the calendar, with Georgia next on Oct. 31 in Atlanta, followed by Oklahoma, Kentucky, Vanderbilt and Florida State later in the season.

Florida Just Got A Needed Recruiting Boost After That Ugly Loss
Floridas ugly Week 6 loss to South Carolina left plenty of frustration in Gainesville, but the Gators quickly landed a jolt on the recruiting trail. Five-star wide receiver Easton Royal flipped his commitment from Texas to Florida, giving Billy Napier and his staff a much-needed win as they try to steady the momentum around a 4-2 team that is still trying to sort itself out in SEC play.
Royal arrives with real weight behind the pledge, too. The Class of 2027 standout is ranked by the 247Sports Composite as the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, and he is expected to end his recruitment after the flip. For Florida, it is the kind of addition that can help soften the sting of a damaging loss while reinforcing that the Gators can still win top-end battles even when the results on the field are uneven. Florida Has A Mindset Problem Jon Sumrall Still Has To Fix
Florida coach Jon Sumrall spent part of his latest press conference talking about something far less tangible than formations or play calls: the mood of his team. Even with the Gators only seven points behind at halftime, he said the players looked emotionally low, a sign that the group is still wrestling with how to carry itself when the game gets tight and the margin stays manageable.
For Sumrall, the issue goes deeper than one bad stretch. He said Florida is still working through a larger process of getting the roster aligned with his coaching mindset, and the halftime response remains part of that evaluation. Until the Gators show more confidence and a stronger reaction after the break, this feels like the kind of problem that can linger well beyond a single Saturday. [Read more 🡒]
Floridas Easton Royal Flip Says Plenty About The Gators New Approach
Floridas push to reshape its football future has shown up in a big way with Easton Royal, the five-star wide receiver whose reported NIL agreement with the Gators is valued at more than $1.6 million. For a program trying to reassert itself in recruiting and on the field, that kind of commitment signals a sharper, more aggressive approach to landing elite talent, especially at a position where game-changing playmakers can quickly alter the ceiling of an offense.
Royals arrival also comes with the kind of attention that follows a deal of that size, and it is not the same pressure a prospect used to carry. The Gators are not just buying into his talent, they are attaching real expectations to it, and that creates a spotlight that will follow him from the moment he steps into Gainesville. However this plays out, it is another reminder that Florida is no longer waiting around in the modern recruiting market. [Read more 🡒]
