Florida Enters Crowded SEC Battle For Rising Defensive Back

As Mississippi cornerback Kam Roberts garners attention from top SEC schools, his burgeoning list of Power 5 offers highlights his growing potential and the promising trajectory of his football career.

Kamron Roberts’ phone keeps lighting up.

The Brandon, Mississippi, cornerback landed two more Power Four offers on Monday, with Florida and Mississippi State jumping into the picture. That bumps Roberts’ total to six P4 offers this month alone after earlier additions from BYU, North Carolina, UCLA and Virginia Tech.

Roberts, a three-star prospect with an 88 rating from 247Sports, said the stretch has felt meaningful for him and the people around him.

"This month has been super exciting and a blessing. I can't thank my coaches and teammates enough because they push me daily," Roberts said.

"I'm grateful for the opportunities and for the coaches who have believed in me. I've worked hard for this with my dad, but I'm staying focused on our high-school season, my team, and continuing to improve daily.

"My ultimate goal is to help my team to a state championship. Picking up offers from UCLA, Florida, MSU, and BYU recently means so much coming from these top programs especially the No. 2 team in the country BYU says a lot of their recruiting department because not a lot of Mississippi kids get opportunities there."

Mississippi State’s offer came Monday afternoon and gave the in-state school a place alongside Ole Miss, Arkansas and Missouri on Roberts’ list of SEC suitors. Ole Miss extended its offer in late 2024.

Starkville is less than two hours from Brandon, and Roberts has already been to a Mississippi State game this season. That connection clearly matters to him.

"Getting an offer from Mississippi State means a lot to me. It's one of the three home-state D-I programs, and I know how much it means to people here," Roberts said. "I'd be proud to represent Mississippi if it was the right fit for me."

He also likes what he has seen from Mississippi State under Jeff Lebby. The Bulldogs are 4-2 and 2-2 in the SEC, and Roberts said he is "interested to see what they can build."

Florida’s offer came later in the day, and from a prestige standpoint, it may be the biggest one yet.

Roberts said the Gators have told him they like the way he plays the ball.

"I've been talking to the DB coach and he said he loves my ball skills and how I track the ball well and finish on the ball," Roberts said. "He also mentioned I have great twitch and COD [change-of-direction]. I'm not afraid to come up and hit, and am high IQ with instincts."

Brandon Harris and Dae'one Wilkins are the Florida assistants working with Roberts the most right now. He said Florida is among the schools he hopes to visit this season, along with UCLA, BYU and UNC.

"They all want me to get to a game," Roberts said. "We're working through the schedule to see which other schools I can visit this season, but I'm running out of room and time.

"But I'm going to show love to the ones that have shown me love early on in my recruitment."

On the field, Roberts has backed up the recruiting buzz with production. The 6-foot, 175-pound defensive back has 10 pass breakups, two interceptions and 33 tackles this season. He has also been a factor against the run with 8.0 tackles for loss.

His athletic background includes baseball, and his brother, Kelvin Roberts Jr., was a fourth-round draft pick by the Baltimore Orioles earlier this year. But Roberts has put more emphasis on football this season, and it is showing.

He said Brandon believes it can make a run at the top.

"I believe we're capable of winning a region title and making a deep playoff run to get to state if we keep working and playing together like we have," Roberts said. "We have so much talent from our QBs, WRs, OL, DL, LBs and secondary.

Not to mention all the coaches we have that have college experience, so we are learning at a high level daily as well. And that's fun because I study the game so much and try to be a student of the game every chance I get."

Walter Clayton Jr. Just Hit An NBA Crossroads Florida Fans Will Track

Walter Clayton Jr.s NBA path has already taken another turn before hes had much time to settle in. The former Florida guard was drafted in the first round by the Utah Jazz, then shipped to the Memphis Grizzlies, giving Gators fans a familiar name to follow as he worked to carve out a place at the next level.

Memphis has now waived Clayton as it trims its roster to the leagues 15-player limit, putting him right back into a waiting game familiar to plenty of young pros. There is reported interest from other NBA teams for the upcoming season, which keeps his next stop very much in play and leaves Florida supporters watching to see where he lands next. [Read more 🡒]

Florida Just Forced A Very Different Season Conversation

Floridas upset of Texas in Austin changed the tone around the Gators in a hurry. A 27-24 win at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium gave Florida its first victory on the road against a top-10 opponent in nearly 15 years, and it also marked the programs first-ever win in Austin. For a team trying to prove it belongs in the national picture again, it was the kind of result that forces everyone to look at the schedule differently.

CBS Sports responded by bumping Florida up 10 spots to No. 24 in its latest college football rankings, a notable jump after one of the biggest wins of the weekend. It also came in a larger SEC reshuffle, with 10 league teams now sitting in the top 25 of that re-rank, a reminder that Floridas breakthrough arrived in a conference race that already has plenty of company at the top. Florida Recruiting Momentum Just Put More Pressure On Jon Sumrall

Floridas 2027 recruiting class has become one of the early headliners of the cycle, and the ripple effect is already being felt beyond Gainesville. By mid-October, the Gators had stacked 21 commitments and climbed into the top tier of the national rankings, with a class built around two five-star prospects and a broad mix of four-star and three-star additions on both sides of the ball.

Among the biggest reasons for the surge is wide receiver Easton Royal, who gave Florida another marquee win after starting his process with Texas. That kind of momentum matters because it changes the pressure around every recruiting battle Florida enters from here, especially with more high-profile decisions still to come and rivals now forced to keep pace with a class that is gaining real national traction.
