Florida Commit Is Starting To Feel Like A Classic Gators Gem

Tommy Douglas, a rising recruit for Florida, has demonstrated remarkable strength that could soon make him a beloved figure among Gators fans.

Tommy Douglas didn’t arrive in Florida’s 2027 class with the kind of splash that usually turns heads right away. When the New Jersey tight end committed in April, he was sitting outside the top 500 and joining a wave of Gator pledges with more buzz attached to their names.

That hasn’t stopped him from looking like the kind of prospect Florida fans can get excited about. Douglas recently posted a video from his offseason work, and the headline moment was a 315-pound power clean done with plenty left in the tank. It was a quick reminder of the kind of force he brings, and a glimpse of why Jon Sumrall went after him in the first place.

Back when Douglas made his pledge and was still ranked No. 679, the evaluation was already pointing to a player who looked better than the number next to his name. His tape showed a tight end who doesn’t just block adequately - he looks eager to bury people in the run game. The physicality jumps off the screen, to the point where he could almost pass for an offensive lineman if he were a little bigger.

His stock has climbed since then. Douglas is still listed as a three-star by Rivals and 247, but ESPN has him as a four-star, and his overall ranking has moved up to No. 367 as a composite four-star.

That kind of profile makes him easy to picture in Gainesville once he gets into the weight room. New strength coach Rusty Whitt has made it clear that comfort won’t be part of the program, and Douglas looks like the sort of player who should respond to that approach.

If he puts together a strong senior season, Douglas could pick up that fourth star from Rivals and 247 and end up looking like one of the better recruiting steals in Sumrall’s 2027 class.

Florida Kept Finding Hidden Gems Fans Never Saw Coming

Floridas recruiting history over the past decade is a reminder that the rankings only tell part of the story. Year after year, the Gators found players who arrived with modest expectations and left a much bigger imprint than anyone could have guessed, from steady contributors in the trenches to difference-makers on defense and, in some cases, future NFL talent.

The list stretches across multiple classes and shows how often Floridas best value came from the names fans were least likely to circle on signing day. Some of those players turned into reliable starters, others became stars, and a few climbed all the way into major pro roles, which is why the programs hidden-gem track record feels as important as any blue-chip haul. Florida Could Put Multiple 2026 Opposing Coaches In Real Trouble

CBS Sports annual hot-seat rankings offered a useful snapshot of where Floridas 2026 opponents stand, and it was not exactly a comforting one for the coaches on the other sideline. Jon Sumralls own rating checked in at 0.8 out of 5, but several of the Gators future matchups come against staffs dealing with far more pressure, including Brent Venables at Oklahoma, Pete Golding at Ole Miss and Steve Sarkisian at Texas.

For Florida, that creates an interesting backdrop when those games arrive. A team catching an opponent at the wrong time can turn a routine conference date into a season-shaping spot, and the Gators are set to see multiple coaches who may be fighting for stability by then. The most intriguing part is how much of that tension could be felt before kickoff, with each programs job-security chatter adding another layer to the stakes. [Read more 🡒]
