Florida AD Fights To Keep Todd Golden From Leaving

As prestigious programs express interest, Florida's athletic director is determined to keep coach Todd Golden at the helm, betting on a promising future for the Gators.

Florida's athletic director, Scott Stricklin, is pulling out all the stops to keep head coach Todd Golden from the allure of blue-blood programs like North Carolina and Kansas. With the aim of building a lasting dynasty, Stricklin is ready to offer Golden a new deal, hoping to fend off any potential departures.

Despite Florida's impressive run to a No. 1 seed, their NCAA Tournament journey was cut short with a nail-biting 73-72 loss to No. 9 seed Iowa in the second round. This comes after their magical 2025 national title win, and as rumors swirl about Golden being a target for high-profile openings.

The Tar Heels might be looking for a change if Hubert Davis departs, while Bill Self is contemplating retirement after his illustrious tenure with the Jayhawks.

According to the Associated Press, Stricklin is gearing up to extend Golden's contract for the third consecutive season. Golden's current buyout stands at $16 million, but it will decrease to $11 million on April 16. Stricklin is convinced that Golden can create something special in Gainesville.

"Todd and his team have taken us to rare heights," Stricklin remarked. "This group has connected with Gator Nation in a truly unique way.

The dedication and representation they bring to the University of Florida are exceptional. We're confident Todd will establish a program with lasting success."

In his four seasons at Florida, Golden has racked up a 103-41 record, leading the Gators to three NCAA Tournament appearances and clinching the regular season SEC Championship in 2026.

Reflecting on the recent loss, Golden expressed his disappointment. "It's a tough one to swallow, but credit to Iowa for their performance," Golden said via 247Sports.

"I'm incredibly proud of my team. Securing the second No. 1 seed in a row is a testament to their hard work.

We'll be thinking about this one for a while."

Golden's commitment to his players and the program shines through, as he looks to the future with determination and pride.
