Florida’s opener had all the fireworks Jon Sumrall could have wanted, but one moment put a dent in an otherwise emphatic Week 1 showing.
The Gators rolled to 66 points against Florida Atlantic, and the tone was set immediately when Vernell Brown III broke loose for a 49-yard touchdown on a wide receiver screen. Brown’s run to the end zone lit up the Swamp, and Eric Singleton was part of the play too, helping spring it with a block on the perimeter. The celebration, though, came with a concern: Singleton was rolled up on the play and left with a leg injury.
That’s the one thing hanging over Florida after a night that otherwise looked like a statement. Singleton arrived as a major portal addition after spending last season at Auburn, and he came to Gainesville to reunite with offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, who coached him for two seasons at Georgia Tech before moving on after the 2024 season.
His track record explains why Florida wanted him in the first place. Over his first three college seasons, Singleton has been one of the country’s more productive receivers, averaging 54 catches per year and topping 2,000 career receiving yards. With Dallas Wilson and Brown already in the mix, he was supposed to be the piece that made the passing game even harder to defend.
Aaron Philo was talking about that competition back in August, saying, "I think all the guys in that receiver room... [have] really pushed him to be the best that he can be," Aaron Philo said of Singleton in August. "He's not afraid of competition.
He comes in every day and works his butt off. I'm really excited for him and what he's going to be able to do this season."
For now, Florida had enough firepower without him. Brown finished with six catches for 117 yards and a touchdown, TJ Abrams hauled in a 63-yard catch, and Bailey Stockton caught a touchdown as well. If Singleton’s injury keeps him sidelined, both Abrams and Stockton should see more snaps.
Philo’s start has also given Florida plenty to like. Questions about his experience haven’t shown up through one game. He looked in command of Faulkner’s offense from the opening snap, and he was sharp as both a passer and runner while accounting for nearly 300 yards of total offense and three touchdowns.

There was a lot for Florida fans to enjoy in Week 1, and Sumrall’s emphasis on effort and physicality showed up right away. Still, if Singleton’s injury turns into a longer absence, it could trim the ceiling of an offense that already looked dangerous. That becomes a bigger deal once the schedule gets tougher in a couple of weeks.
