DJ Lagway’s toughest night in 2025 came in Baton Rouge, and the fallout lingered long after Florida’s 20-10 loss to LSU.
Lagway threw five interceptions in that game, one of the low points in a rough season for the Gators. In a new profile by Ross Dellenger of Yahoo Sports, his mother, Nikita Lagway, described flying to Gainesville afterward to check on her son and finding him devastated.
She said he was “broken - depressed, angry and using her shoulder on which to cry.”
When she tried to steady him, telling him, “God’s got you,” Lagway answered, “Momma,” he said back, “I think God forgot about me.”
DeBraun Hampton, a Baylor receiver who followed Lagway from Florida, said the former Gator quarterback mostly kept his struggles to himself during Florida’s 4-8 season. Lagway lived alone and took mostly online classes last year, and Hampton said he carried the weight of the season privately.
“After that LSU game, he came out Monday and acted like nothing ever happened,” Hampton told Dellenger. “What didn’t I hear?
Everything negative that you can imagine. Everything.
In Gainesville, it’s hard when you’re not winning.”
Nikita Lagway said she was “disgusted” by the criticism her son took from Florida fans. She pointed out that he played through multiple injuries and was never fully healthy with the Gators.
“That’s not a crybaby. That’s a baller,” she said.
“It bothered me to hear people say he’s weak or injury-prone,” Nikita said. “I just want people to know, this season right here is going to be the first of my son’s career since 10th grade where he’s healthy and injury-free.”
Lagway finished last season as a 12-game starter, completing 63.2% of his passes for 2,264 yards, 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. He averaged 6.7 yards per attempt and 188.7 yards per game.
