Caleb Cooper Backs Jon Sumrall's Vision for Florida Gators Success

Jon Sumrall's dynamic coaching leaves a lasting impression on top prospect Caleb Cooper, boosting Florida Gators' recruitment hopes.

On Tuesday, Gainesville was buzzing with excitement as several out-of-state prospects, including defensive back Caleb Cooper from Charlotte, NC, made their way to check out the Florida Gators during spring practice. Under the guidance of head coach Jon Sumrall, the Gators showcased what makes their program special.

Caleb Cooper, standing at 6-0 and weighing 207 pounds, hails from Providence Day. He was thoroughly impressed with what he saw on the Florida campus.

“It was outstanding,” Cooper shared about his visit. “I got to see the campus and everything.

It was a good experience overall, and I got a firsthand look at what Florida has to offer.”

Cooper observed the Gators in action during spring practice, focusing intently on the coaching dynamics. “It was really good,” he noted.

“Seeing firsthand how hands-on the coaches are, the intensity was there. Practice was full of energy and the coaches have that as well.”

This visit marked Cooper's first trip to Gainesville, and he left with a strong impression of the coaching staff. “I think very highly of Coach [Chris] Collins, Coach Sumrall, and Coach [Brad] White,” Cooper remarked.

“The whole culture of Florida football is really moving in the right direction. Speaking with Coach Sumrall one-on-one, I believe he’s the right guy for this team and he’s going to put Florida back on the map.”

Safeties coach Chris Collins had a clear message for Cooper, highlighting his versatility on the field. “His pitch to me is that I can play multiple positions on the back end of the secondary,” Cooper explained. “I can be a bigger guy who slides into the box, but I’m also good in coverage, so I can play in space or as a hybrid nickel.”

Coach Sumrall echoed Collins' sentiments, reinforcing the Gators’ interest in Cooper. “His pitch was along those same lines,” Cooper said.

“They both watched my tape and emphasized my ability to play multiple positions. Coach Sumrall mentioned that I’m a physical player, and at the end of the day, football players got to play football.”

Before the visit, Cooper had a top six that included Florida, Tennessee, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech. After experiencing the Gators' program firsthand, Florida remains at the top of his list.

“Florida was already at the top of the list in general,” Cooper confirmed. “They definitely solidified why they’re on that list.”
