South Florida holds a special place in the heart of Gators’ cornerbacks coach Brandon Harris, and it’s evident in how he recruits his players. With over 25 players from last season’s roster hailing from this talent-rich area, Harris taps into a region known for producing top-notch cornerbacks both in college and the pros. A Miami native himself, Harris has been coaching and observing these athletes for years.
“They learn to handle pressure early,” Harris explains. “By the time they reach college, they’re not just ready for the spotlight-they thrive in it.”
Among those Harris has watched develop are freshmen J’Vari Flowers and Ben Hanks III, both expected to make waves in Florida’s secondary this year.
“They’re inseparable,” Harris notes. “You can’t mention one without the other.
They have that ‘it’ factor that draws people in. J-Rock [J’Vari] is someone fans come specifically to see, and Ben’s team is always a highlight.
I knew they’d be special.”
Upon taking the role, Harris prioritized keeping key players like Dijon Johnson, Flowers, and Hanks III on the roster, especially after a series of coaching changes that left the transfer portal looming.
“I was on a Disney cruise for Christmas, but I spent it on FaceTime with our players, reassuring them about their future at Florida,” Harris shares. “Convincing wasn’t hard-they love it here. They just needed to know the plan moving forward.”
One standout from last season, Cormani McClain, chose to stay under Harris’ leadership, contributing 17 tackles and an interception.
“Mani is exceptional,” Harris praises. “He’s not the loudest, but in conversation, he’s fascinating. He’s eager for what’s ahead and excited to play alongside the guys who chose to remain Gators.”
With his new position in Gainesville, Harris completes his journey across every Division I school in Florida. His deep roots and relationships in south Florida have smoothed each transition.
“Wearing this logo and being part of this team is thrilling,” Harris concludes.
