Boogie Fland Commits To Florida Return After Big Decision

Florida's Boogie Fland, determined to tackle unfinished business and build on his Gator legacy, commits to a pivotal junior season amidst team uncertainties.

Boogie Fland, the talented sophomore guard from Florida, is set to make his return for his junior season. Speaking with the UF-affiliated NIL collective, Florida Victorious, Fland expressed his deep connection to the Gators.

"I love being a Gator," he shared. "There's still some unfinished business, and with the staff, we're excited for year two."

Fland's impact was undeniable this past season, as he started all 35 games, putting up an average of 11.6 points and 3.5 assists per contest. His journey to Florida was an interesting one.

Originally signing with Arkansas, Fland was a prized recruit for head coach John Calipari, known for his defensive skills and scoring versatility. However, a thumb injury cut his freshman year short, leading to surgery.

After testing the NBA Draft waters, Fland decided to return to college. The Gators, fresh off a national championship, quickly became his top choice. An official visit sealed the deal, and Fland filled a crucial gap in Florida's backcourt after the departure of three key players to the NBA.

Despite undergoing sports hernia surgery in the offseason, Fland was back in time for preseason, working hard to mesh with returning players and fellow transfer Xaivian Lee. His sophomore year showcased his defensive prowess, though his shooting from beyond the arc dipped to 24 percent. Still, his overall play was strong, boasting a two-to-one assist-to-turnover ratio and a 57.4 percent success rate on two-point shots.

Coach Todd Golden praised Fland's leadership and defensive skills. "Boog's defense is incredible," Golden noted after a win over Alabama.

"Eight steals against a team like that? He's gritty, an old-school point guard.

Eight assists, one turnover-it's invaluable."

Fland's decision to return marks the first of several anticipated announcements from the team. The Gators are still waiting on decisions from Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Rueben Chinyelu, who might pursue professional careers.

Meanwhile, the team continues to support Micah Handlogten's effort for a medical hardship waiver to extend his eligibility. The potential changes could mean a fresh look for Florida next season, but with Fland's return, the Gators have a solid foundation to build upon.
