Billy Napier Is Suddenly Back In A Job Florida Fans Know Well

Could Billy Napier's impressive turnaround at James Madison position him as the leading contender for the Maryland Terrapins head coaching vacancy?

Maryland’s coaching search took its first big turn on Wednesday, and the name at the center of it is a familiar one.

After the Terrapins moved on from Mike Locksley following an 8-year run in College Park, CBS Sports insider John Talty reported that former Florida head coach Billy Napier has already emerged as the biggest name tied to the opening. The change came after Maryland’s 37-30 Week 7 loss to Rutgers, a defeat that dropped the Terps to 2-5.

Now the pressure shifts to second-year athletic director James Smith, who will be tasked with finding the next coach to lead the program. A search like this always starts with a long list, but Napier has landed near the top right away.

Napier’s Power 4 résumé is obvious. He took over at Florida in 2022 after a four-year run with Louisiana, where he had built plenty of momentum.

But Gainesville never clicked. Florida fired him last October after a rough 3-4 start, and he left with a 22-23 record.

Since then, he has been back on the sideline at James Madison, where the rebound has been immediate. The Dukes hired Napier shortly after he left Florida to replace Bob Chesney, and he has them rolling at 7-0. As it stands, James Madison looks on track for a second straight College Football Playoff appearance.

Maryland is still early in the process, so no final call is coming soon. Even so, Napier’s name is already front and center, and if his success at James Madison keeps up, a return to the Power 4 level could come sooner than expected.

Jon Sumralls Late-Game Mindset Said Everything About Florida Vs Texas

Late in the fourth quarter against Texas, Jon Sumrall made it clear he was thinking the same way plenty of aggressive coaches do in a tight game: he wanted the first down, not the safer kick. The Florida coachs mindset fit the moment, with the Gators trying to finish off a victory and trusting the offense to make one more play instead of settling for points and handing the outcome back to the Longhorns.

On the critical third down, Tramell Jones answered with a nine-yard run that sealed it, removing the need for any debate about a field goal or a fourth-down call. Still, the whole sequence said a lot about how Florida viewed the end of the game, and it leaves the interesting question of what Sumrall would have done if Jones had been stopped short. Florida Defense Finally Showed An Edge With Georgia Looming

Floridas defense had been under fire for looking too cautious under coordinator Brad White, especially when explosive plays started piling up against it. Against Texas, though, the Gators looked far more willing to take chances, leaning into pressure and forcing Arch Manning to deal with a much different look than the one opponents had seen earlier in the season.

The shift was noticeable enough to raise the bigger question now hanging over Florida: was that just a one-game adjustment, or the start of a real change in how this defense wants to operate? With Georgia coming up, the Gators have a chance to show whether the more aggressive approach can hold up against a deeper, more punishing offense. [Read more 🡒]

SEC Week 8 Games Could Reshape What Florida Just Started

Floridas path in the SEC is about to be shaped by a busy Week 8 slate, with six league games carrying plenty of ripple effects for the Gators and the rest of the conference. The preview leans into recent results, current records and past meeting history, while four Florida beat reporters weigh in with predictions on how the weekend could unfold.

For a program trying to build momentum, the timing matters because these games can alter the pecking order just as conference races start to tighten. Florida is watching not only its own trajectory, but also how the rest of the SEC sorts itself out around it, and this weeks matchups could quickly change which teams look like contenders, spoilers or something in between.
