Billy Gonzales Sparks Reunion with New Coaching Job Announcement

Veteran coach Billy Gonzales, known for his impactful tenure at Florida, returns to the field with Texas, setting the stage for an intriguing reunion with the Gators.

Billy Gonzales, a familiar face to Florida Gators fans, is set to make waves on the opposite sideline this fall. After a distinguished 12-year tenure with the Gators, Gonzales will join the Texas Longhorns as a wide receiver analyst. This move reunites him with former Florida head coach Will Muschamp, now Texas’ defensive coordinator, and Jabbar Juluke, the new Associate Head Coach of defense and running backs coach for the Longhorns.

Gonzales' coaching journey has been a tapestry of success, marked by his stints at Florida under Urban Meyer, Dan Mullen, and Billy Napier. His first chapter with the Gators began in 2005, where he quickly made his mark as the wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator.

During this period, he played a pivotal role in guiding seven Gators to All-SEC honors, including notable names like Chad Jackson and Percy Harvin. Gonzales' impact was further highlighted by his contributions to Florida's BCS National Championships in 2006 and 2008.

His return to Florida in 2018 was nothing short of spectacular. Under his guidance, the Gators' offense saw 11 players record touchdown receptions, a feat unmatched since 2009.

That year, senior receivers like Tyrie Cleveland and Van Jefferson thrived, combining for over 2,000 yards and 17 touchdowns. Gonzales' knack for developing talent shone through as he mentored players like Eugene Wilson III and Ricky Pearsall, who both ranked among the SEC's top receivers.

When Billy Napier's tenure ended, Gonzales was named interim head coach, a testament to the respect and admiration he commanded from his players. His leadership was evident, and the Gators rallied behind him without hesitation.

Now, as Gonzales embarks on his journey with Texas, anticipation builds for the October 17 matchup when the Gators visit Austin. It promises to be a heartwarming reunion, filled with camaraderie and respect from the Gator faithful.

The Longhorns will kick off their 2026 season at home against Texas State on September 5, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting year with Gonzales in their ranks.
