Big Ten Surge Takes Wild NCAA Tournament Turn

Big Ten teams continue to make waves in the NCAA Tournament, with upsets and dramatic victories paving unexpected paths toward the Final Four.

Big Ten Madness: Kaufman-Renn's Heroics and More

The Big Ten had a night to remember, thanks to Trey Kaufman-Renn's unforgettable performance. After years of absorbing Matt Painter's lessons on second-chance plays, Kaufman-Renn delivered when it mattered most.

With just 0.7 seconds on the clock in San Jose, he tipped in a missed shot by Braden Smith, securing a thrilling 79-77 victory for No. 2 seed Purdue over 11th-seeded Texas in the Sweet 16. Kaufman-Renn was a force throughout, scoring 20 points and sinking his first seven shots, dominating the paint early on.

Texas had tied the game just moments before, with Dailyn Swain converting a three-point play with 11.9 seconds to go. Smith, who added 16 points for Purdue, had previously given the Boilermakers a lead with a drive at the 38-second mark. Now, Purdue sets its sights on top-seeded Arizona in the West Region final, with a coveted Final Four spot up for grabs.

Iowa's Cinderella Story Continues

Under the guidance of first-year coach Ben McCollum, Iowa's magical March journey added another chapter as the ninth-seeded Hawkeyes triumphed over Nebraska 77-71 in the South Region semifinal. Bennett Stirtz led the charge with 20 points, while Alvaro Folgueiras chipped in with 16, including a pivotal three-point play that extended Iowa's lead to six. Folgueiras sealed the victory with a dunk in the final minute.

Having already shocked top-seeded Florida in the second round, the Hawkeyes are now the lowest-seeded Big Ten team to reach a regional final since 1979. Awaiting them is a showdown with Illinois on Saturday, with a Final Four berth on the line.

Illinois' Defensive Masterclass

Illinois showcased one of its finest defensive efforts of the season, dispatching second-seeded Houston 65-55 to secure its 11th Elite Eight appearance and second in three years. David Mirkovic led the Illini with 14 points and 10 rebounds, as Illinois stifled last year’s national runner-up from start to finish. Playing near their home turf, Houston struggled to find any rhythm against Illinois' physical defense and endured prolonged cold spells.

Next up for the Illini is a Big Ten clash with Iowa in the South Region final.

Arizona's Offensive Showcase

Arizona wasted no time asserting its dominance, storming to a 109-88 victory over Arkansas with a record-setting offensive display. Freshmen Brayden Burries and Koa Peat each tallied 21 points, propelling Arizona to its first Elite Eight since 2015. Peat described it as the most enjoyable game of his career, highlighting the team’s chemistry and fast-paced style.

The Wildcats, riding a 12-game winning streak, are set to meet Purdue in a highly anticipated West Region final.
