Auburn’s first SEC test under Alex Golesh comes with a familiar face running the offense, and Golesh made it clear on the eve of the matchup that Byrum Brown means a lot more to him than just another quarterback.
Golesh and Brown have been linked since the 2023 season, when Golesh arrived at South Florida and Brown was already in place as the starter. Over the course of Brown’s three seasons in Tampa, he started every game, twice topped 3,000 passing yards, and helped fuel two explosive years in 2023 and 2025 that featured 54 touchdown passes against just 18 interceptions.
When Golesh left USF for Auburn, Brown followed him to the Plains. Now the two are set for a new stage together, with Auburn hosting Florida on Saturday night in a primetime SEC opener at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Both teams are 2-0, and kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Speaking with SEC Network and analyst Paul Finebaum, Golesh praised Brown’s poise, growth and leadership ahead of the Tigers’ conference debut.
“Byrum is ready to rock. He’s as composed and process-driven of a young guy as I’ve been around in a really long time,” Alex Golesh said.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to be around some high-level quarterbacks. Byrum is (high-end), the way he leads, the way he communicates, the way he’s composed.
I reiterated to him after that Baylor (season-opening victory) a conversation we had when he got here back in January, which is, understand this, it’s going to go up and down in terms of what people say, how they act, what the perception of you is.
“The one thing you can’t do is change who you are. Essentially, don’t listen to anybody.
To go through and see what his growth has been, certainly as a player and he’s grown tremendously as a quarterback, but just the growth as a young guy to see the ups and the downs, to see him handle all of that, has been nothing short of special. He’s a special young guy.
He’s earned the respect of this team very quickly.”

Florida walked out of Jordan-Hare Stadium with a 44-39 win over Auburn and a reminder that this season may already be taking on a different feel. The Gators are 3-0 for the first time since 2019, and they finally snapped their SEC road drought with a performance that leaned on timely offense and a defense that kept hunting all afternoon.
Jadan Baugh powered the day with 162 yards and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard burst on fourth-and-one that turned into one of the games defining plays. Floridas defense added seven sacks, and when a team can run the ball, finish drives and pressure the quarterback like that, it starts to look less like a hot start and more like a template worth paying attention to. Florida Faces A Doubt Gators Fans Wont Want To Hear
Florida heads into Week 3 with plenty of intrigue, but The Athletics Manny Navarro is betting the trip to Jordan-Hare Stadium ends badly for the Gators. Navarro picked Auburn to edge Florida 28-27, pointing to a matchup that could hinge on whether Jadan Baugh can crack a run defense that has been stout so far this season. For Florida, that means the ground game may have to do real work if the Gators want to keep the pressure off their offense and avoid playing from behind.
