Head coach Kalen DeBoer finally shut down Alabama’s quarterback competition on Saturday, naming Keelon Russell the starter over Austin Mack. That was the marquee battle still hanging in the air, but it’s far from the only one. With Week 1 just two weeks away, several Power Conference jobs are still up for grabs.
Here’s a look at five of the biggest races and where they appear to be headed.
At Tennessee, the fight is centered on two quarterbacks who are both still light on experience: Faizon Brandon and George MacIntyre. Brandon, a five-star 2026 high-school recruit, is trying to win the job as a true freshman. MacIntyre, a 2025 four-star prospect, saw action in only two home games last season - against FCS East Tennessee State and New Mexico State - and completed 7 of 9 passes for 69 yards.
The Volunteers held their second scrimmage on Saturday, and Brandon seemed to remain in front. Still, Josh Heupel stopped short of naming a starter afterward, saying the call could wait until Week 1. Knox News beat reporter Adam Sparks pointed to two things that have helped Brandon separate: he’s “a better runner, both in scrambling situations on pass plays and designed quarterback runs.
"Brandon has also been a more consistent deep ball passer," Sparks wrote. Heupel hasn’t made it official, but the direction is pretty clear.
Prediction: BRANDON
Iowa’s competition has taken a different shape. Hank Brown backed up Mark Gronowski in 2025, and his last start came in a rough 2024 SEC opener at Auburn, when he threw three first-half interceptions and got benched at halftime of a loss to Arkansas. Jeremy Hecklinski arrived at Iowa last year after transferring from Wake Forest and enters 2026 with only two career pass attempts.
Brown may have the more recognizable résumé, but Hecklinski made the louder statement at a recent scrimmage. The Athletic’s Scott Dochterman called it “perhaps the most impressive Kids’ Day passing performance in Kirk Ferentz’s 28 seasons as head coach.” The stat line backed that up: Hecklinski went 17 of 25 for 205 yards and five touchdowns, while Brown finished 9 of 21 for 42 yards.

Prediction: HECKLINSKI
Arizona State is dealing with a familiar battle, just with a different twist. Cutter Boley and Mikey Keene are back in a quarterback fight for the second straight year, though this time one of them will actually win the job.
Boley lost a battle with Zach Calzada at Kentucky last August before taking over in Week 3. Keene, meanwhile, led the Mountain West in completion percentage at Fresno State in both 2023 and 2024, then couldn’t crack Michigan’s depth chart over five-star true freshman Bryce Underwood and never took a snap for the Wolverines.
Kenny Dillingham said last week that both quarterbacks are at the top of the pecking order after each had “a really good scrimmage,” and the race sounds like it’s going right down to the wire. Even so, the lean here is Boley, whom Dillingham recruited while at Oregon.
"That's a guy who we think has unbelievable potential for us," he told Arizona Sports radio in February.

Boley may get an early chance to validate that belief.
Prediction: BOLEY
Florida’s battle has tightened, but Aaron Philo may still have the slightest edge. Philo “had a head start” in the competition after arriving with his former Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner, first-year Florida coach Jon Sumrall said recently. Tramell Jones Jr. has pushed him, though, and kept the race close.
Sumrall said, "I think Trammell's grown a ton," and added, "The biggest growth he's got to make is operating from the line of scrimmage," before finishing with, "But he's making plays... He's got a bright future."
The gap has narrowed, but Philo’s familiarity with the offense could be the difference when Week 1 arrives.
Prediction: PHILO
Vanderbilt’s competition features three quarterbacks, though Whit Muschamp is a distant third. The real battle is between Jared Curtis, a five-star true freshman and the highest-rated recruit in program history, and Blaze Berlowitz, who backed up Diego Pavia last season.
Curtis’ status as the top recruit in Vanderbilt history would seem to give him the inside track, especially after he decommitted from Georgia. But Clark Lea said at SEC media day last month that "there weren't any promises made."
Lea later praised Curtis after last Saturday’s scrimmage, saying it was "probably ... his best day, just start to finish, which is really promising. He's adapting to college football."
Even with Berlowitz in the mix, Curtis looks like the one to watch.

Jake Slaughter has moved into the Chargers starting center spot after Tyler Biadasz went down, a notable shift for a player originally drafted to play guard, while Anthony Richardson Sr. had a rough outing for Indianapolis with 3 completions on 9 attempts for 24 yards and two sacks. Heze Kent arrived at Florida with a simple idea of what he wanted to be, even if others around him saw a different path. The 2026 tight end is entering a room with plenty of depth, which makes immediate playing time as a true freshman unlikely, but his focus has been on staying at the position he believes fits him best rather than drifting toward the trenches where his size has led some to project him.
Kent has responded by trimming weight and continuing to sharpen the details that matter most for a tight end, from movement to overall skill development. Floridas second fall camp scrimmage offered one of the clearest peeks yet at where the quarterback competition stands, with Tramell Jones running with the first team and making his presence felt on both sides of the ball. He scored a touchdown and also picked off a pass, the kind of flash that keeps a battle like this very much alive as the Gators sort through their options for 2026.
Jon Sumrall is expected to bring some clarity soon, and the timing matters with roughly a week left before a starter has to be chosen.
