Ricky Pearsall’s path in the NFL has already been anything but smooth, and now the former Florida wideout may be staring at another major setback. After trying to rehab a PCL injury through the offseason, there’s a real chance the San Francisco 49ers could be without him for the entire 2026 season.
That possibility was laid out bluntly by KNBR 49ers insider Matt Maiocco, who said the knee issue has not responded the way the team hoped. Maiocco explained that the ligament was expected to heal on its own, but Pearsall re-aggravated it last year and then dealt with swelling after working through the first two days of training camp.
“This doesn't look good either. You know, the posterior cruciate ligament is an injury that oftentimes heals on its own.
And that was the expectation last year. He injured that thing, came back, kind of re-aggravated it, and just he had a difficult time shaking that.
Well, the idea was or the thought would be that it would heal on its own through the offseason. And it doesn't appear as if that has happened.
After the first two days of training camp, which he ran all the routes, he wasn't limited in any fashion. He experienced swelling in that knee.
And now it's kind of back to the drawing board. If surgery is required, he's going to miss the season.
He's going to miss the entire season….. So at this point, I think it's reasonable, rational, logical for the 49ers to not expect Ricky Pearsall to make any contribution in 2026.”
Maiocco later summed it up even more directly: "At this point I think it's reasonable, rational, logical, for the 49ers to not expect Ricky Pearsall to make any contribution in 2026."
Pearsall’s career has been interrupted over and over by circumstances outside his control. Before his rookie season in 2024, he was shot in the chest during a robbery attempt. He returned about a month later and finished that season with 400 receiving yards.
The injury issues kept coming. He dealt with a hamstring problem entering training camp in 2025, then got off to a strong start once the season began.
In Weeks 1 through 4, he was productive, including an eight-catch, 117-yard performance against Arizona in Week 3. But in Week 4, he suffered the PCL injury that kept him out until Week 11.
Even after that long absence, Pearsall still flashed late in the year. He posted 96 yards against Tennessee and 85 yards against Chicago after returning.
The 49ers’ receiver room has also been in constant motion around him. Pearsall entered the league alongside Deebo Samuel, Jauan Jennings, and Brandon Aiyuk.
Jennings has since left for Minnesota, while Aiyuk has dealt with his own injury problems. In the offseason, San Francisco added Mike Evans and Christian Kirk.
Samuel had left for Washington, but reports on Thursday said he is coming back to San Francisco. The 49ers also drafted De’Zhaun Stribling out of Ole Miss.
Pearsall, meanwhile, was one of the few bright spots for Florida during his time with the Gators in 2022 and 2023.

Denzel Aberdeens path to a fifth college season finally got sorted out, and it gives Florida a little more clarity on a roster question that had lingered into the background. Aberdeen, who spent a season at Kentucky before transferring back to the Gators, has been granted another year of eligibility for 2026-27 after a preliminary injunction from U.S. District Court Judge Charlotte Sweeney required the NCAA to declare all members of the 2022 recruiting class eligible.
For Florida, the ruling mostly confirms what Todd Golden and Scott Stricklin had already been projecting, even as the guard was not covered under the NCAAs new five-for-five eligibility rules. It removes some uncertainty around Aberdeens future in Gainesville and keeps another experienced piece in play for a roster that has already had to track eligibility developments closely.
