Aaron Philo didn’t just get through his Florida debut - he made it look easy.
In the Gators’ 66-21 Week 1 win over Florida Atlantic, the Georgia Tech transfer delivered the kind of opening night that can change the conversation around a quarterback fast. Philo finished 16 of 21 for 275 yards, three passing touchdowns and one interception, then added 20 rushing yards and another score on six carries.
Florida also got work from Tramel Jones Jr., the other contender in the preseason quarterback battle. Jones went 4 of 5 for 68 yards and a touchdown.
Philo entered the year as something of a question mark, but his first outing clearly moved the needle nationally. CBS Sports had ranked him No. 42 among quarterbacks before the season.
After Week 1, he jumped all the way to No. 19.
“Aside from an interception on a well-thrown ball that should have been caught, Philo was almost perfect in his Florida debut as the Gators cruised to a 66-21 win over FAU,” wrote Davis Cobb.
“He completed 16 of 21 passes for 275 yards and three touchdowns while also notching a score on the ground. He completed 2 of 3 passes traveling 20+ air yards as the Gators racked up 624 yards.”
Philo kept the tone measured after the game, crediting the setup around him more than making it about himself.
"I think the coaches put together a great game plan for me to get settled in and for the whole offense to get settled in," Philo said, via USA Today.
"I think we came out playing fast, and ultimately we kept that up. There are corrections we have to make, but we’ll continue to get better and come out and play again next week."
The performance gave Florida exactly what it needed from its new quarterback. The next step is bigger: Philo has to keep climbing if the Gators are going to stay in the College Football Playoff mix.
