Jason Robertson’s future in Dallas could end up being tied to one question: does a long-term extension get done before the 2027 Trade Deadline?
For now, the Stars forward is on a one-year deal worth $12 million after a long negotiation that avoided arbitration. That number came in lower than many fans expected, but the bigger issue is what comes next. Robertson is set to become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026-27 season, which means Dallas could face the possibility of losing him for nothing if the two sides never get close on a new agreement.
That’s why a trade can’t be ruled out. If Robertson stays productive and the Stars still don’t have a long-term deal in place by the deadline, Dallas could decide that moving him makes more sense than taking the risk of letting him walk. The Seattle Kraken were already rumored to have nearly landed him before, with a package that reportedly included their first-round draft pick, and another strong season could push his trade value even higher if a contender comes calling.
Boston is one team that makes sense on paper. The Bruins have already added JJ Peterka to their top-six group and brought James Hagens into the fold, but they still need more offense if they want to be taken seriously as championship contenders.
They also have the assets to put together a real offer. The catch is that Robertson would likely need to see a team on the rise, not just one willing to pay the price.
If the Bruins start fast in 2026-27 and are in a playoff spot by the deadline, they become a much more realistic landing spot.
Edmonton is another natural fit. The Oilers had a strong offseason, strengthening their goaltending depth, cleaning up their defensive depth, and replacing Kris Knoblauch.
What they didn’t do was add that extra top-six forward many fans wanted. That leaves them positioned to chase a major move at the 2027 deadline, and Robertson fits the bill.
There’s also a roster angle that could work in Edmonton’s favor. The Oilers can give Isaac Howard a larger role this season and see what they have before deciding whether to use him in a bigger trade package.
If Howard breaks through, Edmonton can keep him and still go after another scoring piece using draft capital and prospects. And from Robertson’s side, the idea of skating with Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard is obviously appealing.
With the Oilers expected to remain Stanley Cup contenders for the next few seasons, they could also offer him the kind of long-term extension he’d be looking for.
Pittsburgh is the third possibility, and maybe the most familiar one. The Penguins were linked to Robertson for months and were seen as the frontrunners if Dallas ever decided to move him.
They still make sense as a destination, but the biggest question is whether they’ll be in the playoff race when the deadline arrives. Sidney Crosby makes it dangerous to completely count them out, but the rest of the roster doesn’t inspire much confidence that they’ll be true contenders.
If Pittsburgh is in the mix, though, it becomes a compelling fit. The Penguins have the assets to pull off a deal, and Robertson could view them as a long-term home, especially with the chance to become the team’s next star once Crosby hangs up his skates.
It still feels difficult to picture Robertson anywhere other than Dallas. But if the Stars and their winger can’t find common ground on a new deal before next summer, a deadline move is a real possibility.
