Oilers Roster Shuffle Leaves One Big Lineup Question Unanswered

The Edmonton Oilers make strategic moves to bolster their lineup, activating Colton Dach from injured reserve and loaning Josh Samanski to the AHL, as they prepare for their rematch against the Utah Mammoth.

The Edmonton Oilers made a few familiar-looking roster tweaks ahead of Saturday night’s rematch with the Utah Mammoth, and the biggest change is Colton Dach coming off injured reserve for his return to the lineup.

Dach’s activation opens the door for him to suit up tonight, while Josh Samanski was still listed as an emergency recall from the Bakersfield Condors before being loaned back to the AHL club for now.

That shuffle was enough to clear the way for Zach Hyman and Jake Walman to get back in as well, so the Oilers will have three players available tonight who missed Thursday’s first meeting with Utah.

There was at least some thought that Jason Dickinson could be placed on IR retroactively, though his status beyond that remains unclear. There’s also a belief that Ryan Nugent-Hopkins could be ready to make his season debut late next week.

For Samanski, the early-season push hasn’t quite looked like the continuation of last year’s momentum. He didn’t make the opening night roster, but injuries up front quickly pulled him back into the mix after just one game. Since then, he’s played six games, recorded one assist and averaged 7:44 per night, a noticeable drop from his 10:34 average a season ago.

His night against Utah on Thursday also went sideways in a hurry, with a double-minor for high-sticking helping the Mammoth jump out to an early lead they never gave back.

Dach, meanwhile, is set to play centre for the fourth time this season after a two-week gap between games. In his last outing against the Seattle Kraken, he logged 12:33, picked up two penalty minutes and put one shot on goal. He enters tonight still without a point, carrying a minus-4 rating while averaging 13:23 per game, but he has been strong in the circle, winning 54.8 per cent of his faceoffs.

Walman is also back after missing the last three games, and Tristan Jarry will get the start in goal.

Oilers Linked To A Top-Six Target They May Struggle To Land

A top-six forward is once again part of the conversation around Edmonton, with Travis Konecny surfacing as a speculative fit if Philadelphia decides to shake up its roster. For the Oilers, the attraction is obvious: a player with enough speed and finish to slot into the kind of role this team has been searching to stabilize.

The obstacle is just as obvious. Edmonton is tight against the cap and does not have much in the way of prospect capital to lean on, which makes any meaningful addition harder to pull off than it looks on paper. If the Flyers do explore changes, the Oilers would likely need to get creative to make the money work and still have enough left to satisfy Philadelphias asking price. [Read more 🡒]

Oilers Getting Healthier Again As Another Return Comes Into Focus

The Oilers are starting to get their bench depth back in order, with Colton Dach activated from injured reserve and Josh Samanski sent back to Bakersfield. Edmonton is also set to have Jake Walman and Zach Hyman in the lineup tonight, another sign that the club is moving through this stretch with more of its regular pieces available after a brief spell of shuffling around the roster.

There is still more help on the way, too, as the teams forward group could get even fuller during next weeks homestand. For a club trying to keep its lines stable and its blue line intact, those coming returns matter almost as much as the ones already announced, especially with Samanski back in the AHL after six games and the Oilers lining up another round of decisions on the forward side. Oilers Face An Immediate Forward Puzzle With A Key Return Near

Zach Hymans return appears to be right around the corner, and it gives the Oilers a fresh forward puzzle as they head to Salt Lake City. Any time a player with Hymans edge and finishing ability is about to come back into the mix, the ripple effect reaches all the way through Edmontons top nine, especially with the group already trying to settle into a rhythm on the road.

The question now is how the coaching staff wants to balance its most dangerous pieces without losing chemistry elsewhere. One possibility has Leon Draisaitl anchoring a line with Ike Howard and Kasperi Kapanen, while Connor McDavid could get a look with Hyman and Vasily Podkolzin, a setup built around past evidence of what certain players can do with Draisaitl in particular. However it shakes out, the Oilers are about to find out how quickly they can turn a good problem into a useful one. [Read more 🡒]
