The Edmonton Oilers have put defenceman Atro Leppänen on waivers, the team announced Saturday.
Leppänen, 27, was hurt in the preseason while playing for Edmonton and has not yet appeared in a game this season. Because of that, the Oilers did not need to make a move involving him in order to get cap-compliant to open the year.
If he clears waivers, Leppänen will report to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors, a club that could use the help. He played 53 games for Bakersfield last season and produced 11 goals and 38 points.
Edmonton first signed Leppänen to a one-year deal in April 2025 after he put up 21 goals and 63 points in 60 games with Vaasan Sport in the Finnish Elite League. The Oilers then signed him to another one-year contract this past summer.
Last season, DFO Edmonton prospect writer Spencer Pomoty offered this assessment of Leppänen’s game:
A bit of progression has been made this year with Atro’s shot selection. Earlier in the year the Condors defenceman was shooting everything and anything, it didn’t matter the angle or place. However Leppänen is now thinking about it before he releases a heavy wrister…
Leppänen is such a crafty player from the blueline, however the foot speed is still troubling and he is due to get beat every once in a while on defence. The NHL would be a massive jump for him at this point in his career, but he has adjusted to the North American ice and Leppänen continues to shine offensively.
Bakersfield enters play at the bottom of the AHL’s Pacific Division with a 4-5-1 record, having scored 26 goals and allowed 30 through 10 games.

Oilers Get The Win They Needed But One Concern Just Grew
The Oilers got the kind of result they needed with a 4-2 win over Vancouver, and they did it with a few familiar pieces back in the mix. Connor McDavid kept his run rolling with another multi-point night, extending both his point and assist streak while helping set up goals for Mattias Ekholm and Leon Draisaitl. Devon Levi was back in net and gave Edmonton a solid enough return, turning aside 20 of 22 shots, while Zach Hyman also rejoined the lineup and chipped in an assist.
Even with the victory, the game carried a little more edge than the final score suggested. Edmontons offense looked sharp enough to keep control, but the night ended with one of the clubs regular contributors unavailable for the third period after taking a puck to the face, a reminder that the lineup remains a moving target even when the standings points come through. For a team trying to build momentum, the win mattered, but so did the concern that came with it. [Read more 🡒]
Oilers Suddenly Have A Goalie Decision As Help Arrives Up Front
The Oilers got a timely lift on both ends of the roster heading into their game against Vancouver, with Devon Levi and Zach Hyman coming off injured reserve. Levi, who was acquired in the offseason and had been handling the crease before his injury, gives Edmonton another option in goal, while Hymans return from a neck injury adds a needed jolt up front after he missed several games.
The roster shuffle to make room for those moves sent Matt Tomkins down to the AHLs Bakersfield Condors, and it leaves Edmonton with a fresh decision in net as the lineup gets healthier. Hymans presence should help the Oilers forward group, but the bigger immediate question is how the team chooses to manage the crease now that Levi is back in the mix. [Read more 🡒]
Oilers Get A Needed Lineup Reset Against Vancouver
The Oilers are getting a much-needed reset against Vancouver, and it starts with a healthier-looking lineup than they have been able to ice lately. Devon Levi is back in goal for the first time since Oct. 22 after missing seven games with an undisclosed injury, giving Edmonton a chance to settle back into a more familiar rhythm behind a group that has been juggling bodies and roles.
Zach Hyman is also set to rejoin the mix, while Trent Frederic and Ty Emberson are expected back after recent absences. Tristan Jarry will serve as the backup, and Matt Tomkins has been sent down to the AHL, giving the Oilers a clearer picture of their depth as they try to stabilize things heading into a key stretch.
