Kirby Dach’s future in Montreal has started to draw real attention, and Frank Seravalli says Edmonton is right at the front of the line.
Dach is under contract with the Canadiens through the 2026-27 season, but Seravalli reported in his Casino.org column that the Oilers and Calgary Flames are both tracking his situation closely. According to Seravalli, Montreal has kept its price high, and those two teams have been watching to see whether the Canadiens eventually blink.
“The truth is Dach’s future in Montréal has been tenuous for months now. Sources indicate two teams in particular - the Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames - have kept close tabs on Dach’s status this month to see if they could wait out the Habs, who have held firm on a high asking price.”
Seravalli went even further on Edmonton’s interest.
“The interest in Edmonton borders on drooling; the Oilers are intent on acquiring Dach at some point. Whether that’s before the season starts, at the March 1 trade deadline, or next summer as a free agent.
The push isn’t necessarily to reunite the Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, native with his younger brother, Colton, on their hometown team. Dach was GM Stan Bowman’s bet at No. 3 overall in 2019 in Chicago, and Bowman feels only a poor run of injury luck has kept Dach from reaching that potential.
Dach’s 2025-26 season was cut short by injuries, limiting him to 37 games. In those appearances, he finished with 15 points, scoring eight goals and adding seven assists.
Now, after a tough stretch, Dach says he’s finally back to full health and focused on locking down his spot in the Canadiens’ lineup.
“It feels good to be healthy,” Dach said. "I think a lot of us had nicks, bruises and bumps from the playoffs.
That's just how it goes. I think over the summer, you build that health back up and it's nice to kind of be able to hit the ground running instead of dealing with lingering issues."
He also said the hardest part of the injury stretch was refusing to give in when things kept piling up. Dach said he has been through a lot over the last couple of years, and that at times it was difficult and hard.
