This time, the spark came from Lauren Kyle McDavid’s Instagram story. A recent post showing Leafs-branded merchandise set off a wave of speculation among some Toronto fans, who immediately jumped to the familiar conclusion that McDavid is destined to wind up in blue and white.

At first glance, it’s easy to see why the post caught attention. McDavid’s wife wearing Leafs gear is the kind of thing that can light up hockey social media in a slow stretch like this one. But the leap from that to a McDavid-to-Toronto theory is a pretty wild one.
Lauren Kyle McDavid is more than just the spouse of the NHL’s best player. She runs multiple businesses, starting with an interior design firm called Kyle and Co. and later expanding into other ventures, including premium sportswear brand Sports Club Atelier, or SCA.
SCA has already worked with several hockey teams, including the Oilers and Hockey Canada. Lauren has also made a name for herself in WAG playoff jackets and designed clothing for the wives and girlfriends of the Dallas Stars and the Stanley Cup-winning Carolina Hurricanes just this past season.
With a new season approaching, expanding that reach to more teams fits the business. The Maple Leafs would simply be another market for the brand to tap into.
There’s also one important detail that undercuts the whole frenzy: the story that started this wasn’t even posted directly from Lauren’s account. She reposted a story from SCA asking people to vote on their favorite color for upcoming merch.
SCA then tried to shut down the noise with a follow-up, saying the brand is growing to 12 teams this season and will also have an Oilers version of the merch.
“PSA: Everyone needs to relax,” the story read. “Sports Club Atelier is growing this year and expanding to 12 teams. We don’t discriminate, even the rivals.”
Could McDavid end up with the Maple Leafs someday? Sure. But using an Instagram story about upcoming merch from Lauren’s brand as proof is a big stretch.
