Oilers Facing Major Power Play Concern Amid Push

Oilers aim for the Pacific Division lead despite power play struggles and late-game challenges in a critical win against the Ducks.

After a thrilling overtime victory in Vegas, the Edmonton Oilers returned to Rogers Place for an afternoon showdown against the Pacific Division-leading Anaheim Ducks. This matchup had all the intensity of a playoff preview, and for Oilers fans, a 4-2 regulation win couldn’t have been sweeter.

POWER PLAY STRUGGLES

The Oilers' power play has been a highlight this season, but recently, it’s hit a snag, going 2-for-24 over the last nine games. The absence of Leon Draisaitl, a crucial piece of their power play puzzle, has been felt.

His ability to convert chances is missed, and the team needs someone to step up and find the back of the net. Despite creating quality opportunities, the Oilers couldn’t capitalize on their three power play chances against Anaheim, thanks in part to Lukas Dostal's stellar penalty killing for the Ducks.

Adjustments are needed. Whether it’s drawing up new plays to open cross-seam passes or crowding the net for rebounds, the Oilers must innovate to keep opponents guessing. With Draisaitl sidelined, Evan Bouchard is expected to take more shots, but strategic tweaks are essential as they approach the final stretch of the season.

Confidence was high when the Oilers led by three with 14 minutes left. However, a quick pair of goals from the Ducks turned the game tense.

While Edmonton held on for the win, the game’s end wasn’t as smooth as hoped. Shutting down games without late drama would ease nerves, but perhaps these challenges are building resilience for the playoffs.

Overcoming adversity now could be the key to postseason success.

CHASING DOWN THE PACIFIC DIVISION

With this regulation victory, the Oilers closed the gap to three points behind the division-leading Ducks, with eight games remaining. Despite Anaheim having a game in hand, Edmonton’s position is far stronger than it could have been. A few weeks ago, a division title seemed unlikely, but now the Oilers are in the hunt.

The team’s recent form, even without Draisaitl, is promising. They’re playing with precision and determination, finding ways to win that eluded them earlier.

It’s not about watching the scoreboard or hoping for Anaheim to slip; it’s about focusing on their own performance. By maintaining this momentum, the Oilers can pressure those above them in the standings.

The opportunity is there, and it’s up to them to seize it.
