Oilers Add Mathieu Joseph And Fans Will Debate What It Means

The Oilers aim to boost their defensive capabilities with the strategic addition of forward Mathieu Joseph.

The Edmonton Oilers have added another depth piece, landing forward Mathieu Joseph on a one-year, $1 million contract, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.

Joseph, 29, split last season between two teams. He posted two goals and 11 points in 39 games with the St. Louis Blues, then finished with the Los Angeles Kings, where he was held without a point in 12 appearances.

A fourth-round pick by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2015 draft, Joseph has built a long NHL resume. He has played 471 games and produced 61 goals and 160 points across stops with the Lightning, Ottawa Senators, Blues, and Kings.

The move fits the kind of profile Edmonton’s analytics department tends to target. HockeyViz data from last season showed Joseph driving offence at a six per cent rate below league average, while his defensive impact came in at a 12 per cent rate above league average.

His penalty kill work also checked in six per cent above league average. Over the course of his career, Joseph has typically driven play at a level somewhere between a low-end second-line player and an average first-line player, with last season landing between second- and third-line contributions.

Joseph’s signing comes amid a busy stretch for the Oilers. The club also made headline moves by trading for goaltender Devon Levi from the Buffalo Sabres and sending Darnell Nurse to the San Jose Sharks in a deal that brought back Shakir Mukhamadullin and defensive prospect Zack Sharp.

Edmonton has also added defenceman Ryan Shea on a five-year, $4 million AAV deal, signed forward Eduards Tralmaks to a one-year, $850,000 contract, and brought back winger Kasperi Kapanen on a one-year, $2.6 million pact.

With Joseph in the fold, the Oilers now have $8.253 million in cap space, according to PuckPedia, and still have restricted free agents Colton Dach, Spencer Stastney, and Mukhamadullin to sign.

Oilers Goalie Situation Just Took Another Frustrating Turn

Connor Ingrams lone season in Edmonton has become part of a much larger summer scramble in net, with the Oilers still searching for answers after their talks with the veteran goalie failed to produce a new deal. The market has already started to sort itself out around the club, and Edmonton has been tied to a handful of different options as it tries to settle on a direction before the rest of the goalie carousel slows down.

Among the names linked to the Oilers are Sebastian Cossa, Devon Levi and Sergei Bobrovsky, a list that underscores just how wide the teams search has become. Ingram, meanwhile, is also drawing attention elsewhere, including from Ottawa as a possible backup option, leaving Edmonton to keep weighing its alternatives while one of last seasons familiar faces moves toward another stop. Oilers Just Made A Goaltending Gamble That Could Change Everything

The Oilers have taken another swing at solving the one area that has haunted too many of their recent runs, signing Frederik Andersen to a one-year deal and adding Devon Levi in a move that signals a real reset in net. Andersen comes in on a modest salary with performance bonuses attached, while Levi arrives as a younger piece with upside, giving Edmonton a different kind of depth chart heading toward the 2026-27 season.

What makes the decision interesting is the structure around it, because Edmonton is not treating this as a simple starter-and-backup arrangement. The plan is to carry Andersen, Levi and Tristan Jarry in a three-goalie setup, a rare approach for a team trying to build stability rather than just patch a hole, and it leaves the Oilers with plenty to sort out before opening night of that season.
