The Maple Leafs are defying the odds, turning adversity into opportunity. Despite losing Auston Matthews to a season-ending knee injury, Toronto has snagged five out of six possible points. Their latest triumph, a gritty 4-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild, showcased their resilience.
Missing top defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who was out for personal reasons, and after trading three veterans at the deadline, the Leafs faced a formidable opponent in the Wild, a team with Stanley Cup aspirations. Yet, the Leafs’ makeshift lineup surged to a 3-0 lead in the second period, thanks to two goals from recent call-up Bo Groulx.
Minnesota didn't back down, with Vladimir Tarasenko netting two quick goals in the third to tighten the game. But Matthew Knies sealed the deal with a determined empty-netter.
Defensively, Jake McCabe was a wall, blocking nine of the Leafs' 28 shots. Morgan Rielly and Brandon Carlo also stepped up, delivering one of their best performances on the blueline.
In net, Anthony Stolarz was stellar, making 36 saves to earn his first win since before the Olympic break. The Leafs capitalized on a shaky stretch for Wild goalie Jesper Wallstedt in the second period.
John Tavares and Matias Maccelli set up Rielly for a top-shelf snipe, followed by Troy Stecher’s shot deflected by Groulx. Groulx, who had been waiting since 2021 for an NHL goal, added another after intercepting a turnover.
Both teams were coming off losses the previous night, with the Wild eager to rebound after falling to the Rangers. Despite their pressure, they couldn’t solve Stolarz in the first period.
Toronto made strategic changes, including calling up Henry Thrun from the Marlies and giving Steven Lorentz a break to address his checking game. Michael Pezzetta, known for his physicality, stepped in but took a seat after a bruising encounter in Anaheim.
The Leafs are proving that even with key players sidelined, their depth and determination can keep them in the fight.
