In the world of professional hockey, courage takes many forms. For Luke Prokop, a promising 23-year-old defenseman in the Edmonton Oilers' system, it meant coming out as the sport's first openly gay player back in 2021. Now, his groundbreaking journey is set to be showcased in a documentary titled “The Hockey Player,” premiering this summer.
Drafted in the third round by the Nashville Predators in 2020, Prokop honed his skills with the Calgary Hitmen, Edmonton Oil Kings, and Seattle Thunderbirds before stepping up to the professional ranks. Standing tall at 6-foot-5, he's currently making his mark with the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers’ AHL affiliate.
Prokop’s decision to come out was a bold one, especially in a sport that has had its challenges with LGBTQ2S+ inclusivity. The NHL's recent ban on specialty jerseys, following some players' refusal to wear them, highlights the ongoing complexities within the league. Despite potential risks to his career, Prokop has no regrets about living his truth.
Reflecting on his journey, Prokop shared, “It’s definitely changed, but I’d say it’s changed for the better. I think I’ve grown a lot in the relationships that I have with my teammates and coaches. I think I am able to connect to the fans a bit better.”
Prokop’s path through professional hockey has taken him to three different teams, with stints in NHL training camps for both Nashville and Edmonton. His openness has only strengthened his bonds within the sport. “Being out has kinda helped me really embrace who I am, and some of my best friendships have come after I’ve come out,” he explained.
His announcement reverberated across North America, drawing significant attention. “I don’t love being the centre of attention.
Even when I came out, I knew it was going to be a big deal; I didn’t know it was going to get as big as it did,” Prokop admitted. Yet, the widespread reach of his story has proven to be a positive force.
Over the past four seasons, a documentary crew has chronicled Prokop’s journey through various hockey leagues, capturing the essence of his experience as a trailblazer in the sport. The documentary aims to provide an authentic look at the challenges and triumphs of the first openly gay professional hockey player.
Initially hesitant about the project, Prokop was eventually convinced of its potential impact. “If I can help someone else out there that might be going through something similar and just by watching the documentary, it gives them a little bit of help, a little bit of hope, I’m happy to do it,” he said.
The documentary, spearheaded by producer Taylor Prestidge, began filming during Prokop’s final WHL season with the Seattle Thunderbirds. Prestidge saw it as a unique chance to share a story of resilience and determination, not just within hockey but for anyone striving to overcome barriers.
Signing with the Oilers was a dream come true for Prokop, who grew up cheering for the team. “Ultimately, I think this was the right place for me to go,” he said. His connection to Edmonton has only deepened his commitment to the sport and its community.
Prokop hopes the documentary will inspire others to live authentically and pursue their dreams. “It just gives another level of hope,” he said. “For the queer community, it’s a little bit difficult, a couple more hurdles to hop over, but that just makes us so much more resilient.”
“The Hockey Player” will have red-carpet premieres in Edmonton and Toronto and will be available on Apple TV, Prime Video, and OUTtv in June. This documentary promises to be a compelling narrative of courage, authenticity, and the enduring spirit of a true pioneer in professional hockey.
