There are three NHL storylines worth keeping an eye on, and each one says something different about how quickly the league can turn a player into a target, a roster into a puzzle, or a rumor into a full-blown what-if.
Start with Evan Bouchard, because the noise around him hasn’t matched the player Edmonton actually has. The criticism has come hard, but the case against him doesn’t really hold up when you look at how much he’s grown on the defensive side, especially since Mattias Ekholm arrived. He still has the occasional lapse - no puck-moving defender at that level is spotless - but the idea that he’s some kind of liability ignores both his progress and the reality that the Oilers haven’t always had goaltending that could erase every mistake behind him.
The numbers back him up, too. Last season, Bouchard delivered major offense, handled the power play, and was also effective on the penalty kill.
And the old argument that he’s only thriving because he shares the ice with McDavid and Draisaitl doesn’t really stick. His value shows up beyond that, and his playoff work has been just as strong.
The story people tell about him just doesn’t line up with the player he’s become.
Brad Marchand is dealing with a very different kind of issue in Florida. He needed surgery for lingering lower-body problems, with the source of the trouble sounding like a hip issue and a sports hernia.
He had tried to push through it and hoped he could avoid the procedure, but eventually it got to the point where surgery was unavoidable. That means he’ll miss a charity game, and it also raises a real question about whether he’ll be ready when the 2026-27 season begins.
This has been building since late last season. The Panthers managed him through the year and even got him to the Winter Olympics with Team Canada, but after he returned, the situation didn’t hold and he was shut down. Now he’s lined up on Florida’s third line at training camp, and with the Panthers working with basically no cap wiggle room - plus the likelihood that LTIR rules may need to come into play - any missed time could create headaches for the roster.
And then there’s the one everyone can’t stop talking about: the idea of Connor McDavid and Auston Matthews on the same team. It started as a wild “what if,” but the reason it keeps getting attention is simple enough - the cap picture could make it possible, and there are teams with the money and room to make a run at it if the two stars ever wanted to coordinate their next move. They even share representation, which only adds to the speculation.
Still, fantasy and reality are two different things. The NHL doesn’t hand out championships just because two giants show up in the same locker room.
McDavid and Draisaitl are proof of that. And since both players are getting older, the timing would have to be right for the idea to go from fun conversation to actual possibility.

Spencer Stastney spent much of last season filling in as a useful stopgap on the Edmonton blue line, stepping into a bigger role when Brett Kulak was out and getting into 66 games along the way. He also signed a one-year contract extension in July, a move that reflected his value as a depth defenseman who could be trusted when injuries thinned out the lineup.
Since the Oilers got healthier, though, Stastneys role has been squeezed, which is the sort of depth-chart reality that can force a team to make uncomfortable decisions. Edmonton has enough defensive depth to at least consider whether keeping a player in that spot is the best use of the asset, and the idea of moving him for a draft pick has surfaced as the kind of option that would help the organization balance now versus later. The idea of two franchise centers, two captains and two of the leagues biggest names eventually landing on the same roster has been floated in recent chatter, and it is the kind of speculation that immediately lands with extra force for Oilers fans.
Fueling the conversation is the fact that McDavid and Matthews share the same agent, which only makes the hypothetical feel a little more plausible on the surface.
