The Edmonton Oilers are facing familiar challenges in the crease, even with new goaltenders in the lineup. Their first game after the Olympic break was a high-scoring affair, but they ultimately fell short against the Anaheim Ducks, losing 6-5.
Much of the focus has been on Tristan Jarry, who struggled by allowing five goals on 24 shots. Head coach Kris Knoblauch didn't hold back in his post-game comments, expressing dissatisfaction with the goaltending, especially in the crucial third period.
"I wasn’t happy with the goaltending," Knoblauch stated. "The goals we gave up, particularly in the third, were disappointing.
There were other mistakes, but better goaltending is essential."
Jarry, brought in mid-December to stabilize the Oilers' goaltending situation, currently has a 3.85 GAA and a .864 SV% in 12 appearances. Connor Ingram has fared slightly better with a .895 SV%, but it's clear the Oilers need more consistency in the net.
The decision to trade Stuart Skinner for Jarry was always a gamble, especially considering Jarry's contract, which runs through the 2027-28 season with a $5.375 million cap hit. Moving such a contract would be challenging for Edmonton, and any search for an external solution would require creativity.
There's been talk of Jordan Binnington as a potential target, though his own struggles this season, reflected in a .864 SV%, make him a questionable upgrade. His experience in high-pressure games could be valuable, but the St. Louis Blues might not be willing to part with him, given his $6 million cap hit and contract through 2026-27.
Sergei Bobrovsky's name has also surfaced in trade discussions, but his hefty $10 million cap hit makes him an unlikely acquisition for the Oilers.
With the trade deadline approaching on March 6, the Oilers are in a tight spot with just $10,000 in cap space. Any move would require sending money out, possibly involving Ingram, who has a $1.150 million cap hit.
Here are three potential, budget-friendly options the Oilers might consider:
Jet Greaves (Columbus Blue Jackets)
Greaves, at 24, is having an impressive season with a 2.62 GAA and .910 SV% over 37 games. His contract is manageable at $812,500, and he's a pending RFA. Though the Blue Jackets are now in playoff contention, making a trade less likely, it's worth exploring.
Casey De Smith (Dallas Stars)
De Smith, 34, has been solid in a backup role for the Stars, posting a 2.31 GAA and .913 SV% in 22 games. With Jake Oettinger as their starter, De Smith might be available, but the Stars would likely demand a fair return, especially given their recent playoff encounters with the Oilers.
Michael DiPietro (Providence Bruins)
DiPietro, 26, was waived by the Boston Bruins but went unclaimed. Although he's only appeared in three NHL games, his AHL success over the past few seasons makes him an intriguing option for the Oilers.
The Oilers have some tough decisions ahead as they navigate their goaltending issues. Finding the right fit without breaking the bank will be key to their success down the stretch.
