Connor McDavid's early exit from practice on Monday had Oilers fans holding their breath. The Edmonton captain skated for a brief 10 minutes before leaving the ice at Rogers Place. With a game in Utah on the horizon, the timing raised eyebrows.
However, McDavid reassured reporters afterward that there's no cause for alarm. While he admitted to dealing with some minor hip and groin issues, he made it clear that missing game time isn't on the agenda. "Just hips and groin stuff, it’s all good," McDavid said, downplaying any concerns.
Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch added some context, explaining that McDavid could have opted for a maintenance day but chose to hit the ice instead. "I haven’t heard from the trainer, so I’m not sure the severity of it… He wanted to go on the ice, check it out," Knoblauch noted. "He was on the line of taking a maintenance day."
The Oilers are in a critical phase of their season, making McDavid's presence essential. With Leon Draisaitl already sidelined, the team is battling to secure a playoff spot.
Currently sitting third in the Pacific Division, they're five points behind the division-leading Anaheim Ducks and only four points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings, who are fighting to break into the playoff picture. The Seattle Kraken and San Jose Sharks are also in the mix, adding pressure to every game.
McDavid also addressed some recent comments he made about Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper, which some interpreted as a critique of his own team. McDavid clarified, "Not sure how it was taken that way.
It wasn’t supposed to be that way. But I understand how people could look at it that way.
It’s not what I was intending to do at all." He emphasized that his words were meant as praise for a strong opponent, nothing more.
As the Oilers prepare for their next matchup, all eyes will be on McDavid's performance, hoping he continues to lead his team with the skill and determination fans have come to expect.
