Claude Giroux is headed back to Philadelphia.
According to The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, Giroux will sign with the Flyers, ending a free-agency process that had been anything but settled. His market seemed to change by the hour this week, with Ottawa and Philadelphia first emerging as the known options, and Pagnotta noting that other teams could still be involved.
That uncertainty only grew as the week went on. Pagnotta later said on The Sheet that Giroux was seriously considering Edmonton, with Ottawa still in the picture and Philadelphia reportedly out. Oilers Now host Bob Stauffer also said it wouldn’t be a surprise if Edmonton jumped in, while pointing to Philly and Ottawa as the expected competition.
Even with all that movement, one report kept Philadelphia in the conversation. A Flyers source told The Athletic the team expected Giroux to sign a one-year deal to return. If Pagnotta’s latest report holds, that’s exactly how it played out.
Giroux, 38, is still bringing plenty to the table. He led the NHL in faceoff percentage this season at 61.5% and finished with 49 points. He also posted a 59% on-ice goals percentage, remains a right-shot center who can move to wing, and has stayed productive since leaving Philadelphia the first time, piling up 288 points in 325 regular-season games.
The expected price tag had been projected around a one-year, $2.5 million deal, and the final number will be worth watching. The contract is also likely to be loaded with bonuses.
For the Flyers, this is a clean, full-circle move. Their longtime captain, traded away in 2022, is set to come back and finish where it started. For a team that made the playoffs and wants to keep building, Giroux brings faceoff help, veteran presence, and a low-risk addition that fits neatly into the roster.
