Bouchard Makes Rare Oilers History In Big Moment

Evan Bouchard's milestone goal marks a significant achievement for Oilers' defense, breaking a 17-year-old record and leading his team towards playoff aspirations.

The Edmonton Oilers are flexing their offensive muscles, and it's a sight to behold. Tuesday night belonged to Connor McDavid, who put on a clinic by netting his 400th and 401st career goals in a commanding 5-2 victory over the Utah Mammoth. That second goal was particularly special, marking the 1,200th point in McDavid's already storied career.

But the spotlight didn't stay on McDavid for long. Fast forward to Thursday's thrilling 4-3 overtime win against the Vegas Golden Knights, and it was Evan Bouchard stealing the show. Bouchard not only secured two points but also delivered the game-winning goal in overtime, making it a night to remember for Oilers fans.

Bouchard's season has been nothing short of impressive. His overtime winner was his 20th goal of the season, a milestone no Oilers defenseman has reached since Sheldon Souray in the 2008-09 season. Souray wrapped up that year with 23 goals, setting a high bar that Bouchard is well on his way to challenging.

Back in the 2023-24 season, Bouchard set his previous career high with 18 goals and 82 points. This year, he's already surpassed that, boasting 84 points through 73 games and setting his sights on even more.

Currently leading all NHL defensemen in scoring, Bouchard stands above Zach Werenski, who trails with 77 points. Last season, Cale Makar led the pack with 92 points, earning the Norris Trophy in the process.

The last time a defenseman hit the 94-point mark was in the 2022-23 season when Erik Karlsson notched 101 points with the San Jose Sharks, a performance that also earned him the Norris Trophy.

Beyond individual achievements, Bouchard and the Oilers are finding their groove. They've gone 6-3-1 in their last 10 games, a promising stretch especially considering they've been without Leon Draisaitl for the last five.

Looking ahead, the Oilers have a crucial matchup against the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday afternoon. A regulation win would bring them within three points of the Ducks for the Pacific Division lead, adding extra weight to an already pivotal game. The Oilers are aiming for their second three-game winning streak of the season, and given their current form, they're certainly up for the challenge.
