Duke's Tournament Hopes Hang on Ngongba's Return
As the Duke Blue Devils gear up for their second-round clash in the 2026 Men's NCAA Tournament against TCU, all eyes are on the potential return of Patrick Ngongba II. Head coach Jon Scheyer expressed optimism but stopped short of confirming Ngongba's availability for the game on March 21.
The towering 6-foot-11 sophomore has been a key figure for Duke, averaging 10.7 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. His absence over the last five games due to persistent foot soreness has been felt, even as the top-seeded Blue Devils have continued their impressive 33-2 run.
"We're about to practice," Scheyer mentioned on March 20. "I'm hopeful he's going to be available for tomorrow.
We'll see what he can do in practice today. If all goes well...
I know he was itching to play yesterday."
Ngongba's presence on the court isn't just about numbers; it's about the dynamic he brings. His ability to protect the rim and contribute to both ends of the floor is something Duke has missed.
Scheyer emphasized the importance of Ngongba being at his best, not just present. "He needs to practice," Scheyer added.
"We just want to make sure he's feeling right to play at a high level."
With Caleb Foster sidelined due to a fractured foot sustained in the regular season finale against UNC, Duke has been leaning on a seven-man rotation. Cayden Boozer, fresh off a career-high 19 points against Siena, and Maliq Brown have stepped into starting roles, helping the team maintain its momentum.
Despite managing well, Duke is eager to have Ngongba back to restore balance and depth. "End of the day, he just changes the dynamic of our team," Scheyer noted.
"You have a guy who's a big-time rim threat. His passing, his pick-and-roll defense, his rim protection, he does a lot for our team."
The final word on Ngongba's status will come with the injury report set to be released at 9 p.m. ET on March 20. For Duke, his return could be the key to unlocking their full potential as they aim to advance further in the tournament.
