What a difference two games can make for the Duke Blue Devils. After a nail-biting win over Florida State in the ACC Tournament quarterfinals, Duke found their rhythm against Clemson, cruising to a victory that restored fan confidence.
However, the team’s dynamic has undeniably shifted due to injuries to key players Caleb Foster and Patrick Ngongba. Foster's situation is particularly concerning, as Coach Jon Scheyer has indicated that a return is only possible if Duke reaches the Final Four.
Ngongba's status, on the other hand, offers a glimmer of hope. After being seen on a knee scooter during the Florida State game, fans were understandably worried.
But following the Clemson win, Scheyer provided an encouraging update: Ngongba is progressing well and is on track to participate in the NCAA Tournament. This is a significant development for the team.
Maliq Brown has filled in admirably for Ngongba, showcasing his talent in the new role. Nevertheless, Ngongba’s presence as a starter is invaluable, and Brown’s contributions off the bench enhance the team's depth. Ensuring Ngongba's full recovery and return to the court remains a top priority for Duke.
With Foster sidelined, Cayden Boozer has stepped up as point guard. Despite a sluggish performance against FSU, he rebounded effectively against Clemson. Given Foster’s fractured foot, it seems unlikely we’ll see him back this season.
Ngongba, however, is trending positively. The 6-11 sophomore, averaging over 10 points and six rebounds per game, has been a powerhouse in the paint. His return could significantly bolster Duke’s tournament prospects.
Duke has managed to navigate the challenges posed by these injuries, but to make a serious run for the national title, having both Foster and Ngongba would be ideal. While Foster’s return seems doubtful, Ngongba’s imminent comeback, as suggested by Scheyer’s latest update, could be pivotal in their quest for glory.
