Nate Sheppard Just Pushed Duke Into A Much Bigger Conversation

Nate Sheppard's record-breaking performance against Boston College cements his legacy at Duke and puts him squarely in the Heisman conversation.

Nate Sheppard didn’t just have a big day against Boston College. He carved out a place in Duke history.

The sophomore running back powered the Blue Devils to bowl eligibility on Saturday, and by the time the dust settled, he had put together a record-breaking performance that left him with the most total touchdowns in a season in school history. He entered the week leading all Power Four players in all-purpose yards per game, and he finished the game atop the FBS in total touchdowns.

The defining moment came in the third quarter, when Sheppard scored his fifth rushing touchdown of the afternoon to stretch Duke’s lead to 41-2. That run gave him a first in program history: no Duke player had ever rushed for five touchdowns in a game before. It also pushed him to 14 rushing touchdowns on the season, tying the school’s single-season record.

Then came the new mark. With that fifth score, Sheppard reached 18 total touchdowns on the year, setting a fresh Duke standard for scrimmage touchdowns in a season.

Sheppard made sure everyone knew he understood the moment, too. After the fifth touchdown, he struck the Heisman pose again, a familiar celebration for him this season.

That kind of afternoon would turn heads anywhere. At Duke, it now stands as one of the most productive games the program has ever seen.

The Blue Devils were in control from the start, even with Boston College arriving on a two-game winning streak over Pitt and Georgia Tech. Duke never let that momentum matter. The only real blemish came in the first half, when a botched snap on an extra point led to a blocked kick and two points for Boston College.

Everything else belonged to Duke, and especially to Sheppard.

And with this game coming in just his eighth appearance of 2026, there’s still plenty of runway left. Duke has at least four regular-season games remaining, plus a bowl game, which means the record book may not be done moving. If Sheppard keeps this pace, the only player who might be able to chase these marks down next season is Sheppard himself.

Duke Just Added More Fuel To A North Carolina Basketball Debate

Duke enters the new college basketball season with the kind of roster and preseason buzz that usually keeps the conversation centered on Durham. Under Jon Scheyer, the Blue Devils are again viewed as a national contender, and CBS has gone so far as to label them the best team in North Carolina. For a program that has spent decades setting the standard, that kind of attention is less a surprise than a reminder of how high the bar remains.

The comparison matters because North Carolina basketball arguments never stay quiet for long, especially when Duke is ranked among the top five before the first meaningful games are played. The Blue Devils have history, talent and expectations all working in their favor, which only sharpens the debate with the other programs in the state. However the season unfolds, Duke has already added another layer to the annual question of who holds the edge in North Carolina. [Read more 🡒]

Nate Sheppard Just Gave Duke Fans A Real Reason To Believe

A lopsided win over Boston College gave Duke football more than another mark in the victory column. The Blue Devils rolled to a 47-2 finish, moved to 6-2 and clinched bowl eligibility, with the defense controlling the game from start to finish and keeping the Eagles out of the end zone.

Nate Sheppard was the centerpiece of it all, setting Duke records with five rushing touchdowns in one game and pushing his season total to 14 on the ground. Boston Colleges only points came on a botched hold on a PAT that was returned for a safety, a fittingly strange footnote to a night when Duke looked as complete as it has all season. [Read more 🡒]

Duke Just Got A Statement Win Fans Will Want To Relive

Duke didnt just beat Boston College, it put together one of those afternoons that fans will be replaying in their heads for a while. The Blue Devils rolled to a 47-2 win behind a dominant all-around showing, with Nate Sheppard powering the offense and the defense controlling the game from start to finish. Jeremiah Hasley also chipped in with key receptions as Duke kept finding ways to move the ball and stay in command.

The most striking part was how complete it looked on both sides. Sheppards five rushing touchdowns set the tone, while Dukes defense made sure Boston College never found much of a foothold, with the Eagles only points coming on a blocked PAT return. For a team looking to stack strong performances, this was the kind of statement win that can linger well beyond the final whistle. [Read more 🡒]
