Manny Diaz Saw One Crucial Sign In Dukes Bounce-Back Win

After a decisive victory over Boston College, head coach Manny Diaz reflects on Duke's dominant performance and the team's path forward.

Duke didn’t just beat Boston College on Saturday. The Blue Devils looked like they had rediscovered themselves.

After a rough stretch that had Manny Diaz’s team sitting at 1-2 in league play following losses to Georgia Tech and North Carolina, Duke steadied things with a win at Virginia. But the performance at Wallace Wade Stadium was something else entirely. Boston College arrived with back-to-back wins, and left on the wrong end of a 47-2 blowout.

The score tells the story, but the details make it even more lopsided. Boston College’s only points came when Duke blocked a PAT and the Eagles returned it for two. Outside of that, Duke controlled every part of the game and never let Boston College find any rhythm.

That mattered because the Eagles had been running the ball well before Saturday. Against Georgia Tech in the previous game, Boston College piled up 399 rushing yards, and quarterback Mason McKenzie had already totaled more than 600 rushing yards on the season.

Duke shut that down cold, holding the Eagles to 78 rushing yards on 33 carries, a 2.4-yard average. McKenzie finished with just 24 yards on 13 attempts.

The Blue Devils were just as disruptive in the backfield and on passing downs. They finished with six sacks, 11 tackles for loss, and forced Boston College into 2-of-13 on third down and 0-of-4 on fourth down. It was the kind of complete defensive control that made the afternoon feel over early.

Offensively, Nate Sheppard was the headline. He ran for 97 yards and five touchdowns on 20 carries, giving Duke the kind of punch that kept the pressure on all game. Walker Eget also handled his business, completing 11 of 18 passes for 201 yards and a touchdown.

Diaz saw the game as more than just a blowout win. For him, the key was the way Duke responded from the previous week.

"The biggest thing to me is that the team got better from last week," Diaz said. "And what happens is when you have a big win, you can start to feel good...On one hand, we can be proud of what we did and what we accomplished, but if we think we've arrived and we've done it all, we're not going to have the outcome going forward that we want."

Duke now turns its attention to a road trip to Raleigh to face NC State (4-4, 2-3 ACC), before heading to Coral Gables for a matchup with No. 1 Miami (8-0, 6-0 ACC).

Duke Football Just Gave Fans One More Reason To Worry About Manny Diaz

Dukes football season has already delivered one of its most lopsided wins in years, with a 47-2 rout of Boston College that locked up bowl eligibility and featured Nate Sheppard setting a school record with five rushing touchdowns. It was the kind of afternoon that gave the Blue Devils a clear on-field lift, even as the program suddenly found itself pulled into a much bigger conversation off the field.

Florida States decision to fire Mike Norvell has immediately put Manny Diaz in the mix for the opening, and that is the sort of attention Duke would rather not be fielding in November. With the football team trying to build on its momentum and Duke basketball set to open its season against Army under Jon Scheyer, the last thing Blue Devils fans want is uncertainty around the coach who has helped steady the program. Jay Bilas Just Reminded Duke Fans What The Brotherhood Still Means

Jay Bilas spent time with the 2026-27 Duke basketball team at Jon Scheyers request, another reminder that the program still leans on voices that know what it means to wear the uniform. A former Blue Devils player and assistant coach, Bilas has long been part of the schools basketball fabric, and his presence around the team fits neatly with the way Duke continues to blend its past with the present as a new season gets rolling.

Bilas will also be on the call as a color commentator for Dukes season opener against Army, giving fans a familiar voice as the Blue Devils begin an early schedule that will quickly start to reveal what this group is made of. For a program that treats its history as part of its identity, the timing of Bilass return is a small but fitting nod to the standard Duke still expects to carry forward. [Read more 🡒]

Duke Suddenly Has A Chance To Make November Matter

A win over Boston College gave Duke a little more breathing room and, more importantly, a reason to think the next few weeks could mean something beyond simply getting to December. Manny Diaz has already guided the Blue Devils back to bowl eligibility, and with Nate Sheppard and CJ Campbell among the players helping steady the roster, the schedule ahead suddenly looks less like a grind and more like an opportunity.

NC State, Miami, Clemson and Wake Forest are still waiting, which is exactly why there is real intrigue around how Duke handles the stretch run. If the Blue Devils can keep stacking wins, they could make noise against higher-ranked opponents and turn a solid season into something far more interesting, even if the idea of a playoff push remains more possibility than promise.
