Manny Diaz has done just about everything Duke football could have asked for in his first two seasons, and that success is exactly why Blue Devils fans have to keep one eye on the future.
Diaz has delivered back-to-back nine-win seasons in Durham, and he pushed Duke to its first ACC Championship since 1989 last season after taking over from Mike Elko, who left in 2023 for Texas A&M. The Blue Devils have poured more into football lately, but Duke still doesn’t sit in the top tier of national destinations for major recruits or portal players, something the program felt after last season with Darian Mensah and Cooper Barkate.
That reality comes with a familiar catch. When a coach overperforms at a place like Duke, bigger jobs start circling. Diaz has now done it twice, and if he keeps winning, his name is only going to get louder in major coaching searches.
ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg recently ran through several coaches who could be in line for the next big opening, speaking with “several industry sources,” and Diaz was part of that conversation.
"Duke has increased its commitment to football, and Diaz, 52, is a great fit there. But he also should have higher-profile opportunities, especially with a diverse background as an assistant.
'The rise of Manny Diaz,' an industry source said. 'Fired by Miami and now he's a hot name at Duke.
Look, you can win at Duke, you can win at a lot of places.'"
That kind of attention isn’t new. Last season, Diaz’s name came up in connection with both the Penn State and Michigan openings.
For now, though, he’s focused on another season in Durham, where uncertainty is part of the backdrop. Duke opens the regular season Saturday against Tulane at Wallace Wade Stadium, and with so many new faces around the program in 2026, Diaz will again be tasked with squeezing the most out of whatever roster he has.
